Currently I have a 305 in my 85 k5. I was going to change over to a 350, but I've just come across a deal on a 383 and I'm not sure if this is going to be the right engine for my needs. I want something that will be good for having fun off road, but also good for towing. The motor also comes with a turbo 350 tranny, but is not set up for the t-case yet. Any knoledge you could share or advice you could give would be greatly appreciated. /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif

not set up for the t case? are you sure its not a 2wdrive tranny? and yes a 383 is a great towing motor and it also has the punch and is snappy like a 350 sounds like a good deal. make sure its the right tranny though.

Take the 383. It has more torque than the 350 will put out at low RPM's. The TH350 should handle it, make sure it's a 4x4 tranny, if not, you'll have to switch it over.

The guy that's selling it said that the tranny is not put together yet. How do you switch it over? Is it costly? and is it something that I could do myself? /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif

ummmm the 383 should mate to your existing tranny..... a 305 block is the same as a 350 ( at least that is what i am told ).... and a 383 is a stroked 350... so just grab the motor and put it in.... and HELL YEAH TORQUI SHE BE!!!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/deal.gif

1st choice: 383... good cause it'll bolt up to most of the stuff on a stock 305 or 350 so the swap is cheap. Good torque at low rpm.

2nd: cummins 5.9L turbo diesel. $pendy conversion Im sure... but 555 ft/lbs at 1400 rpm + 350,000 mile service life + decent mileage = one of the most appropriate-to-be-installed-in-a 4x4 engines ever made.

It would just be in the re-assembly of the transmission. You need the output shaft from a 4x4 version. It will just go in place of the 2wd output shaft. I heard something about advanced adapters selling it, but I'm not sure.
