spin the tire one complete turn and count how many times the drive line turns if it turns 3 and 3/4 turns you would have 3:73's 4 and a quarter turns =4:10's hope this helps

thats what i thought too, but that's not right, i spun the drum i complete turn and the shaft went 1-3/4 turns, the truck orig. was a 6cyl. so i know its got atleast 3:73's or 4:10's, it shifts into 3rd gear at 30mph! thx j.c.

If the diff is non-posi then you need someone to hold the other wheel...or just jack up 1 side.Since you just got it,pull the rear cover and get the numbers. It wouldn't hurt to check the condition for the sake of a few dollars in gear oil.Just my opinion.

    1 3/4 + 1 3/4= 3.5...not 2.73's. They could be 3.73's.

Pull the cover and be sure...

It requires two revolutions of the tire.

Put the tires and wheels back on. Mark the tire, and driveshaft, roll the truck, count the driveshaft turns.
It can not be done by lifting a tire(s) unless you know(FACT) what type of diff.(Posi, locker,Open....) is
    in the axle.
    Good luck

This issue has been cussed and discussed at length previously. Based upon what you have said previoulsy, please explain the following to me:

I tried this method on three axles all sitting side by side, off the ground, not on vehicles. A 14B w/4.56 gears and Detroit Locker, D60, 4.56 gears open, and a 12B, 3.73 gears w/Auburn posi. Two complete revolutions of the drums on the 14 got aprox 4.5 turns of the yoke, same for the D60, and 3 3/4 on the 12B. Looks like it works to me.

The 14 bolt should have turned the driveshaft 4.56 times to one turn of the drums, with both drums turning the same direction. Have you verified the Detroit?
