I got this axle for free[IMG] My friend said that its for a 1/2 ton Chevy but it only has 27 splines, I thought a 10 bolt had 28[IMG]but it also looks like a C-clip design. I've never replaced one of these so I dont know what it supposed to look like, so I took some pics for yall to tell me if I got a free axle or free boat anchor[IMG]

I think you got a free boat anchor. It looks like a late model Mopar 8 1/4" axle out of a dakota with the smaller 6 lug pattern. The flange is a smaller diameter than that of the 6-lug flange on a 1/2 ton 10-bolt.

Hey Davis, I think you might want to mosey on over to the tech section yourself. Have a look at the 'axle identification' area and you'll see lots of good pictures of the "outsides" of rear and front ends, the axle shafts are not shown. [IMG]

The 27 spline thing had me stumped for a while trying to think of a 6 lug application with C-clips that wasn't Chev but was close in size. I never even considered Mopar.

Oh well boat anchor it is I guess, better luck next time dude![IMG]

Do s10 4x4s have 5 or 6 lugs? I just helped a friend replace his and there are 27 and 28 spline versions. That may be what it is.

I have never seen an S-10 with 6 lug axles. They use a 7.5" 10-bolt that has 28 splines and I think a few use 26 splines.

This is gonna sound stupid, but did you mark a spline with a magic marker and then count very carefully around from the mark? Don't forget to include the marked spline. I replaced the axles in my truck last summer and I miscounted about 5 times before I got it right. For some reason it's very confusion counting the splines. At least it was for me... If it only has 27 then it could be a Mopar axle.

Just for information purposes, GM only makes two axles for the 10 bolt 1/2 ton -- 28 spline and 30 spline. The 28 spline is necked down like the one in the photo and was used in up to 1988. Sometime in mid year 1988 GM went to the 30 spline axle.
