It is possible that it is a virus or mal-ware, but first things first. What operating system are you using? What anti-virus program are you using, and when was it last run? Tell any other info you have on your computer. Thanks.

Since your Norton antivirus subscription ran out, try this...it's free...it's a quick fix, but I'd definitely recommend getting the antivirus up and running.

Back up everything inmportant, and write zeros to the hard drive, total nuke job.

    Then, reinstall and be amazed!

Usually if your "junk" is slow and you don't know that much (no offense) it has a lot of superfluous crap running on it

Half of the money I get on the side working on comps are nuke jobs

Is it a bad idea to have DSL pluged right into the back of my computer? It there a better way to protect it? How is ad-aware? What else is there to use.

    Thx mike

You really nuked your drive because RJ told you to?? wow...

    lol... j/k RJ. =)

What you should have done is searched each of those unremovable files on the web... most if not all unremovable viruses have a removal program that someone wrote at some point. But since you already reformatted... (did you actually write zeros to the drive or just put in the restore disk?) you should be good to go for a while. Do all the Windows Updates you possibly can, go to a second hand computer store, buy a Pentium 166 or slower computer with a floppy drive but no hard drive. Buy 2 Realtek 8139 Network cards, and enough network cable for your DSL modem to the 166, then from the 166 to your computer. Go to www.coyotelinux.org and download the Firewall Wizard software. It will install coyote linux on a floppy disk.

Load the disk in the Pentium, turn it on, and after a little configuration, enjoy virus free operation because it's linux....

Of course, if you click on pop-up adds, unsubscribe from spam e-mail or even reply to spam e-mail, you are increasing your risk of getting viruses sent through your new firewall to your computer.

The biggest security flaw in windows is windows itself... you can protect it, but it will always have inherent flaws. Upgrade to Linux and learn to use it... it's actually easier than Windows, and there hasn't been any real viruses released for linux. It has no security flaws, and is very secure out of the box. It does require some configuration on your part, but you can get automated installs that work pretty much like Windows too... I just prefer it manually.

If you need help setting up a Linux computer, or you would like a new computer with Linux on it, just ask... I'll build you one, or walk you through everything you need to do.
