I'm trying to clean my dad's laptop up, and I can't remember how to get to where I can change what programs start when the computer boots. Right now I think every program on the computer starts when he turns the computer on.

    Help?

After you do the Start>Run>msconfig thing, you can uncheck every box under the startup tab without a problem. Think about it first if you run an anti-virus program though.

3 icons in the system tray for me...volume control, windows security center and yahoo. No need to have a bunch of programs running that you aren't using.

You can just google them...it'll bring up what they are and most of the time it'll have specific info regarding if you need to keep it running backweb or not.

I use winpatrol for stuff like this. It brings up a list of start up programs/running applciations and all that. It also monitors your 'puter for new things trying to register for start up priviledges and asks you if you want to allow it.

If you aren't sure what it is or if it is safe, you can pull up info from an online database with info on it (if you pay for the pro version, free version doesn't give the info but still does the rest). I love this little program.

The best way is in the registry if you are comfortable with it.
    Start-run (regedit)

    HKey/local machine
    Software
    microsoft
    windows
    current version
    run

Delete the registry entries you don't want to start-up.

DISCLAMER: don't complain to me if you jack your computer all up.
