Need th400 mod ideas and some other 400 ?\'s answered

Ok, I am getting my TH400 rebuilt and this is what I was planning to do. Also, what other things do I need to tend to besides the kickdown switch; I originally had a 700r4?

B&M overhaul kit, adjustable vacuum modulator, deep aluminum pan, and a art carr reverse gate shifter.

What about a manual valve body kit?

I would like to get a lower first and second gear, but do not want to spend the cash on it.

    Anything else???

    Thanks, Pete.

I have the Art Carr reverse manual valve body along with the "Blue plate special" kevlar cluth's, works awesome, give Wendell Phillips a call, he can tell you more how mine is set up, 303-445-1430

I agree with everything. The reverse manual valve body is nice because it places 1st and reverse close to each other which is nice when you're wheeling. The only drawback to a manual valve body is you have to shift EVERY time, so don't get it if you're not wanting to do all of the work for it. BTW - I love mine and wouldn't go back.

The only other thing I would add is (if possible) use a heavy duty "K" type case so you can take advantage of the stronger converter cover once it's installed in the truck.

The setup I have is a 400 that was mounted to a 203 with the 6 bolt dust cover. This setup is going to be used with a doubler as well.

Oh I forgot, along with the good Kevlar clutches be sure to get the 34 element intermediate sprag.

    Pete,
If you are going to stay with a small block I would go for the lower gears.

Don't forget I am going to have a doubler as well. I will see if I can get the money together in the next week,; it would be nice to have a lower first and second gear.

How could I forget about the doubler. /forums/images/icons/cool.gif I think the stock gears will work good with the doubler but on the street you will notice the lower gears more I think. After doing the 400/205 swap on mine I noticed it when pulling out. Where I noticed the most was in 4wd. What a difference going from the 700/241 to the 400/205.

Also, do not forget about these things...

    NP241 (2.72:1 Low Range)
    NP205 (1.96:1 Low Range)

    700R4 3.06
    Turbo 400 1st 2.48 / 2nd 1.48

The only kit I found for the 400 was a 2.75 first and a 1.75 second, I do not think that will really make a difference for the setup. I would rather install lower gear sets in my axles first.

The low gearset will set you back 500.-600. ouch, there maybe a low gearset for the (3:1) 205 this spring but will be in the 700. range but would be the way to go. If you need a good rebuild, I am very happy with my 400 that shiftmasters did, plus I just finished their website lastnight. /forums/images/icons/grin.gif

I like the idea of the reverse manual valve body. I wanted to do that when we did my 400 but cheaped out and left it full auto for now. We used the T.C.I race tranny kit which uses the heavy duty sprag. If you go full manual, what do you need shift selonoid, or vacuum for???!

If I went manual then I would eliminate those items. I think I will go with the reverse manual valve body. This truck is not a daily driver so always having to shift will not be a hassle.
Now all I have to do is order my parts and drop everything off to my cousin's friend.

I don't think shifting three lousy gears would kill yah!! my daily drivers usually have between 10 and 13!! (big trucks) 3 would be a freakin vacation!!!!
