Do you need a title? In GA all we need is a bill of sale on anything older than 19xx (cant remember, I didn't need one for my '73, though) It also saves you from having to pay the title fee.

Bro, what you are about to do is illegal. If you ever get stopped or have an accident in that truck and an officer checks the vin against the insurance and sees the GM rivets are gone you could go to jail. I know I’ve taken many for it, granted they have all been good stolens. You can beet the rap but not the ride. There is a way to get a new title from your local DMV if you need to. If you need help getting one PM me and I’ll tell you how.

As long as you have the bill of sale, you shouldn't have any problems. I went through a similar deal a few years back. Worst case scenario is that they will trace the current Vin # and issue you registration w/out a title until a certain period of time passes. I think I had to wait like 3 months or something. For all intents and purposes, it's yours legally, no matter what. The waiting period is just a way for the state to cover it's own arse! /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif Have you talked to the state liscensing department and told them your situation? They run into this stuff all the time.

Its not quite that bad...DMV will give you the last registered owners address (which is what is important and apparently what you have anyways) and if I remember this right, you have to send two registered letters to him, wait awhile for response, then you can have the vehicle inspected by the state patrol.

They will run the frame VIN to make sure it isn't stolen, ask for receipts for any stuff you tell them you swapped or they notice (be careful, engine and tranny will have partial vins on them, and they DO care about door, fender, hood, and tailgate receipts with donor VIN's if obviously swapped)

I wouldn't worry about it too much if the truck is legit and not stolen.

Its a PITA, but it can be done. If you've still got the VIN in place, they probably won't even issue you a new WA one. My VIN was gone though, and I just have a WA one in the door frame now.

Friend in Kirkland bought a car to part out. Owner assured him they had title. He gets car, starts stripping it, and the PO tells him no title. So friend goes to DMV, gets last *registered* owners address, sends letter.

Two months, no reply, and now the car has to leave the property ASAP, no time to wait anymore. So he dumps the car in a parking lot. Next morning cops are at his door. PO received, and KEPT the request for title, but didn't act on it. So when cops came to him, he showed them my friends letter to him, and he got off, (which was BS, he should have been screwed too) friend had to go pick up car and dispose of it properly. Guess I threw that in just to show you that you aren't alone. : )

If you are going in person, wonder if you could ask for a legal escort if it would help any? Like I said, I believe for some reason they want any letters of request to the registered owner to be certified, which means to me that they want to make SURE the person had he chance to comply.

Just wondering if you go in person, if that will hold any weight with the DMV if you go back and tell them you talked to the guy. Basically though, do you just have to get a signed piece of paper from the last original owner saying itsn ow your truck and the DMV will accept that, or will you have to fight because of the second owner?

If you go in person, bring a camcorder.....
You WILL need "proof", your word vs. his isn't going to mean much to the DMV.
