Sh!tty NAPA! I just took back a starter that cracked the nose cone where the starter gear rides in. I went out after work to start it and it wouldn't engage the flywheel. Luckily I had a spare starter to get me home.

Today I took it back to get a replacement and they said they wouldn't warranty a cracked starter. WTF! They said the only way this could happen is if I engaged it while it was running. But, that wasn't the case it wouldn't engage all the way.

I should have never got a starter from them in the first place. I guess its back to Auto Zone. They will take anything back with no hassles.

Anyway NAPA sucks! I will never get my parts from them ever ever ever again.

    I just had to vent!

I bought a combo u-joint from NAPA and after 5 months it failed even with grease. When I took it back with the reciept. They said that I would have to buy a new one. I told them that it had a lifetime warrenty on it and he said there was no way. I told him to look it up. The book proved him wrong. So I got a new one. Every NAPA person that I delt with gave me the run around. Customer service to them is not a priority.

How long did you have the starter? Was it the top line or the el cheapo? If the starter warrentee was still good, then they'll replace it for you. The guy was just being an @sshole.

My hubby works for Napa and I've built three trucks and working on my blazer out of Napa parts and the trucks have all been extremely reliable. I also got the top of the line stuff. You get what you pay for with any parts store. If you can give me parts numbers I can tell you who makes the starter, or u-joints, that you bought so you can make sure Autozone won't sell you the same brand starter.

Well, we supply NAPA with Engine Kits, filters etc. At work we are dealling with NAPA accounts all the time. But, just because we sell to them doesn't mean that I have to buy my parts there! Today it sealed the deal to never buy my parts from them anymore.

I had the starter for over 3 months. It was the $35 or so one its wasn't the expensive one. I had my receipt in hand and said that the housing cracked and I showed them. The "kid"
behind the counter went back and talked to someone and then came back and said that they couldn't warranty my starter. I didn't abuse the starter or start it while the engine was running or anything like that.

I will go to AutoZone tomorrow for a new starter.

The longest I've ever had the el cheapo brand starter (from any parts place) lasted a year. The good brand is still going strong 5 years later. My dad had a mercedes (handed down to me) and put a Napa starter in it (the good one) 15 years ago. Still going strong....

The el cheapo brand is not going to be good at any store you go to. If you do go to another store, please! Not autozone! Go to O'Riley's or CarQuest, but not Autozone!!!!!

But, I'm still waiting for parts numbers if you got them.

I know Autozone has cheap ass parts but, you can't beat their warranty. You can return anything no questions asked.
I only have one vehicle and I don't have time to play games at the parts counter. I need to get my vehicle up and running so I can get to work or where ever I need to be.

I am not hear to praise and advertise for AutoZone but, they are open 7 days and have a great warranty system.

Quote from the parts store (my hubby's [IMG]):
It's a Raylock starter which is a best bang for the buck type brand. If you got the top of the line Raylock, it'd still have the same nose cone. It's rare for it to break off on the chevy style. If it does happen, it usually happens on Fords cause of the design. Most of the time when the nose breaks off, it's cause of too much torque. But, [censored] happens too sometimes. It should be under warrentee. Just call the store and act real nice. As far as them not wanting to replace it, that's just a personel problem at that store cause it can be warrenteed.

They said that the reman place that does the starters will not accept a cracked starter. They will send it back to the NAPA store. I don't know if all stores use the same reman place but, that doesn't sound right to me.

Your right sh!t happens! I do have it down to 10 mins to R & R a starter off my Blazer!

I have a NAPA starter on mine with no problems. i would not go to Auot Zone for anything other than oil, and stuff like that. They do have good service on warrantys becasue they have to, they are constantly taking things back. In order of worst to best parts houses...this is how I thin kit is
    AutoZone
    Pep Boys
    Napa
    O'Reilly

I try to get my important stuff at NAPA or O'Reilly.....

10 min huh? You should go for the world record LOL!!!

I guess they were gonna try and use it for a core or something. So does that mean they'll warrentee if for you? If it were me I would ask for that much credit and pay the rest for a top of the line starter. Just please PLEASE don't go to autozone!!!! Anywhere but Autozone!!!!!

Lara is right... the guy was being a ummm well butt munch... but I love Napa. But there is one store I don't buy from because the guys there are rude and think anything not powered by rice sucks. Are there any other Napas where you live? If so try them... I bet they'll help you out. A warrenty should be honored at any store. I'd also call that store and speak to the manager about what went on. If you don't get results go over the top and contact a main corp office... I have a rebuilt 350 from them and it was giving me a ton of problems with exhaust and they fixed it for me no questions asked for free when i complained... that "kid" probably has no clue where his rear is more or less how a starter works.... I'd buy Napa after that experience 10 times over before Autozone crap that blows up 10 days after you bought it....!

What they gave me was 25% off the core. I got $7 and some change, they kept the starter and said have a nice day.
I didn't get the warranty or anything I got the original receipt from when I purchased the starter and that's it.

The starter I have on there now is a GM unit so I think I am going to mount a remote solenoid and replace all the wires that go to the starter and put a heat shield around it.

I think I am still going to pick up a "backup" starter from the Zone. I don't know how I ever drove around without a back up before. Its lucky I had it in there yesterday though!

You said your starter lasted a few years. Do you have headers on your Blazer? I do, which doesn't help with the heat department. Every starter that I ever had on that Blazer Napa or AutoZone usually only last 3 months. Plus, I don't wheel as often as I should so I am not getting crud and such in the starter.

Thanks for listening to my rant but, you and I both know ever Napa jobber operates on their own rules some what. Live and learn I guess.

There isn't really another Napa that is close by. I am leaning towards the Zone because I get better service there. At this particular Napa store I don't. I have always gotten better customer service at the Zone.

Just as a general comment, you can EASILY switch nose cones, and I believe that is what I will be doing from now on if I replace a starter.

Reasoning? Not common, but every once in awhile you hear someone complain that they just replaced the starter, and now it grinds. Since the nose cone is what determines whether or not shimming is required, and only has one bushing in it, checking/replacing that should not be tough, and should eliminate ANY chance of an aftermarket starter grinding the ring gear teeth.

Napa is the only place I go. As far as starters go,Ive put 2 in my truck in 8 years.I used to run through deep mud every weekend and I dont have the cover that goes on the bottom of the bell housing. If I did they would last longer I think. And always great service.

Why is everybody against Autozone? I don't recall ever buying anything from them, but I got a quote for a front driveshaft for like $180 or something, which I thought was pretty good. I'm not defending them in any way, but they seem to be the only local parts place where I'm moving, so I want to know what I might be in for!!

    Zepplin, good luck!!!
