OK, so I've been looking for a new engine to drop into the cherry 1990 Suburban I recently bought. Got it cheap because the engine smokes like a mosquito fogger. [IMG] I was VERY close to providing the ol' Visa card number to the folks at Scoggins-Dickey and having them ship out one of their 330 horsepower, HO350 crate engines. (I really wanted the 383, but couldn't justify the additional $1600 for a measly 33 extra cubic inches!) [IMG]

Anyway, I just picked up a 454 crate engine with 35K miles on the clock. It currently has a Holley Projection system installed on it. However, that won't get me past the emissions folks here in Colorado, so I need to find a stock 454 Throttle Body and intake for it. Anyone know where one might be laying around?

I'd even settle for just the 454 Throttle Body, as then I could use the Edelbrock MPFI system on it. [IMG]

I'm also looking for a late model set of brackets for the accessories. The engine came with brackets for the older multi-belt setup. However, it places the a/c compressor on the wrong side of the engine. [IMG] Since I have the dual a/c setup, it would be a real pain to move the compressor. I need the cast aluminum, late model brackets to work with the serpentine belt setup.

    Thanks!

I yanked off a valve cover on the 454 last night, just to have a peek inside. It was so clean inside that I could have used it for a soup bowl! [IMG] Looks like I'll get lots of miles out of this bad boy! [IMG]

The heads are casting number 14092360, which are the oval port, open chamber truck heads. Perfect for 6,000+ pounds of Suburban, that will often be towing yet another 6,000+ pounds across Colorado mountain passes. [IMG] The block casting number is 14015445, listed as a 78-90 truck block. Can't wait to get it installed and running! [IMG]

Gotta see if I can find the cam specs and such. This is a GM over-the-counter crate engine that was purchased about 3 years ago. Perhaps it needs just a tad more cam before it goes in? [IMG] It's the engine that came with the nice looking cast aluminum finned valve covers. They're black, with silver, machined fins and have a large red 454 logo in the center. Under the 454, it says "By Tonawanda Engine". I remember reading about this engine in one of the motorhead mags when it first became available, but that was quite some time ago, so the ol' memory is a bit foggy. [IMG] Does anyone know where I can find more info on what this thing has inside?

Harry, wish I could say I have a TBI setup for you! But - I would certainly be interested in absorbing some fo the cost of your TBI setup by offering to purchase your Holley Projection system! PM, email, call, smoke signals - whatever, just let me know what you plan to do with that Holley setup!

Sorry, but you're already 3rd in line for it. [IMG] It's still bolted to the intake and folks are already wanting it! [IMG]

I don't even know yet. Gotta see what they're going for. This one has everything but the fuel pump.

Why won't our Colorado E-test buddies pass it??? A TBI is a TBI. They won't even take off the air cleaner. I'd try to get it past them first. To get a stock TBI to work with that engine, you're going to have to burn several chips before you get it right.

Make sure the check engine light comes on if you do run the Holley. They failed my Typhoon since it had Accel DFI and the light never came on. I hooked it up to my brake warning light and it fooled them.

BTW- Don't ask me how my Blazer gets away with emmissions! [IMG]

The Check Engine light is the main culprit. They're supposed to sit in the drivers seat and see the light come on when the key is on, engine off. Then it's supposed to go off when the engine starts. [IMG] Hmm, connecting it to another light that has similar behavior sounds like a neat trick. [IMG] An oil pressure switch from an idiot light application would make the light do that... [IMG]

Yep, they want to see that light come on when the ignition is on and eventually turn off. The brake warning light will do the same thing. Since my Typhoon had an oil pressure guage, I had to use the brake warning light. It was enough to fool them.

The scary part is when they put it on the rollers (AWD, both front and rear). My tranny had a such a hard shift that it almost came off the rollers into the huge fan. I think the driver nearly sh*t his pants by the looks of his face (and so did I). They really should strap the cars down on those rollers.

Sounds like your test is even more stringent than here in Colorado Springs. They don't put the vehicle on rollers here unless it's a diesel. Just the idle test and the 30 seconds at around 2200 rpm test.

Too bad you weren't taking a video of the test. Would have been a hoot to see the drivers face! [IMG]

    Re: New

You interested in selling the brackets on that "multi-belt" setup on your 454? I'm looking for all the brackets to mount on my 427BBC to install in my 87K5. My A/C is radial style short compressor and is mounted on driver's side of engine or left valve cover. Interested?

Hi Sparky, I'll need to find a replacement setup before I commit to selling what's on there. But I'll keep you in mind if I decide to get rid of them!

Sparky - I didn't install my A/C into the truck, so if you need the brackets, send a pic of what you are looking for and I will dig through the PILE of let over brackets I have and find you what you are looking for.
