I have been working on this for a while, with Kyle P's help, and have completed it except for the paint. This is the last pic I have and it does not show the mounting hardware that holds the carrier in place. This was built to hold a 42" TSL, but will work on with my 38"s. I will post a completed pic hopefully this weekend.

Thanks -
It doubles as a license plate holder, has back-up light mounting tabs and will also hold my hi-lift.

Wow, I just looked at the picture again, does the tire go between the stringer and the tailgate?

Does the tire (a 42) touch the tailgate in the up position? Will the latch be to the bumper/tire carrier or does it use the tailgate?

Do you intend to sell these? If so, please PM me a price when you're ready - I most likely would buy one from you.

You need to weld some spikes on that thing!!! Talk about motivating drivers NOT to rear-end you!!!

Maybe also add a "release pin" so that if someone is tailgating you you can drop that sucker on their hood!!!

Oh yeah, and paint some flames and skulls on it too....

Its a little high, no? Looks like it breaks the line of the top of the truck too! /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif Why so tall?

I'm trying to figure out the point... Are you going to be crossing ice cravasses in the Great White North or something? It's interesting, I just don't see why it needs to be so tall.

Re: New rear stinger tire carrier - what do you think?

It is taller than I would like, but with the design I had to angle the carrier out and up from the truck and bumper. This thing will hold a 42" tire. Have you seen an external carrier that will do that? Also, there will be no problems with departure angle. /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

So do you have a winch or hydraulics to lift it up? That has got to weight 300lb with the tire and gear on it.

Re: New rear stinger tire carrier - what do you think?

The tire nor carrier will NOT touch any part of the body. The latch is the genius part - that is where Kyle's engineering knowledge came into play.
I made a receiver type hitch that mounts between the body and bumper. You can not see it in the picture. There is a removable "system" that will allow the tailgate to open without interference. I will get some pics of it when completed.
Not sure about selling these. - but its a thought.

Re: New rear stinger tire carrier - what do you think?

I still see that it would get in the way of departure angle just in the case that it does indeed extend the length of the truck. Drop that truck off the waterfall in Disney, and your rack is BOUND to nail a few things on the way down. Which then means that you need a very secure way to "lock" it into place, and you also need to be sure those "pivot points" at the lower part of the bumper are strong enough to support the ladder half of your truck if it were to get hung up prior to your wheels contacting the ground!

Just my .02! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: New rear stinger tire carrier - what do you think?

That's the good part. The carrier itself doesn't weigh more than 60lbs. The tire might weigh 90lbs or so. The thing with this is the carrier lays on the ground when opened and I checked, there is only 15lbs of weight on the ground with just the carrier. You roll your tire over to it and lay it on the carrier - never lifting the tire. Then, using the leverage of the legnth of the carrier you swing it up. My 38s fell like your lifting about 50lbs - if that much.

But don't you have to drop the whole thing down every time you want to get in the back of the truck? It's a cool idea, but a swingaway seems like it would be easier to live with other than the lifting thing.

Re: New rear stinger tire carrier - what do you think?

Yep you do, by removing one pin. I like the swing away carriers for the smaller tires, but when you get up to 38's or above you are putting a huge load factor with the increased leverage on one side of your bumper. I didn't think that the tube bumper would support the weight of a 42" TSL - especially with my offroad driving style. This design spreads the weight directly to the both sides of the frame.

Re: New rear stinger tire carrier - what do you think?

I may have to reinforce the support pivots on the bumper, they are tabs made from 1/4" steel plate though. You can't really tell from the picture, but they are almost on top of the lower portion of the bumper. I mounted them as high as possible, but will still let the carrier touch the ground without interference with the bumper.
Does someone have a measurement from the tailgate to the outer most portion of the tire of a swing out carrier? I would bet money this thing is closer to the body than the other type of carrier. And the .1875 walled steel tubing would with stand a drop off the waterfall better than a tire hanging out there would... /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif
