    New To 4x4\'s, 4HI vs. 4LO?

Under what offroad conditions would I be better off using LO rather than HI and vice versa?
    Thanks

Depending on which transfer case you have (fulltime or part-time) If you have a fulltime case NP203..then you have the following positions, 4low loc,4low,Nuetral,4high,4High Loc and you would only want to be in the loc positions when offroad. Now if you have the Np205 or 208 tcases, then you have a part time case and you would only want the 4wd positions on offroad or you would encounter gear windup problems.

4LO is mainly used for creeping, rock crawling or when low-end torque is needed. Try going fast in 4LO and you'll soon find out that it's not used for normal off-roading. I've only used 4LO for tugging guys out of snowdrifts or when I'm really bogged down. 4HI, however, can be used for normal trail driving when speed AND traction is needed. DON'T use either LO or HI on dry pavement.......

With my truck, I am either in 2wd or 4lo. I use 4lo because I have no reason to be flying down trails. More damage to the truck and area. The only real times I have used 4 hi is when on snowy roads & when doing beach running. And I only use 4hi when I was in low tide areas. Anything other than that, I choose not to stress the already weak 700r4. Just less heat applied to the trans from slipping.

I almost always run 4-LO on the trails.Let the GEARS do the work,it will give you more response and control, and more compression braking for downhills.About the only time you MAY need 4-HI is if you're bombing thru a big mudhole or hillclimb and need the wheel speed to clear your tires of mud. I almost always go straight for 4 low as soon as I get off the road and on to the trail, it gives better slow speed control and as Corey said, it's alot easier on automatic trans and manual transmission clutches. I only use 4 high on snow covered or icy roads.

I would have to agree that I use 4lo way more than 4hi!
The slow movin rig with the motor around 2200 rpm is a sweet deal for traction. Even better if you have a stick instead of a slush box[IMG].
When I run the Dunes at Pismo it's 4hi time! Allot more spped is needed for climbing the big dumes and 4lo just digs to China!
I would practice both and you'll feel the difference.
    Good luck
