Major tourist trap in the Black Hills burnt last night/early thismorning. Keystone, SD. on the way up to Mt. Rushmore had a big fire. I'll try too get down there with my camera later this afternoon. Historic buildings like the "Railhead" and the "Ruby House" are totally destroyed. The railhead is just a pile of ruble, as where some of the frame of the Ruby House is still standing. [ QUOTE ]
Nine buildings have been burned after an early morning fire in Keystone.

Some of the buildings burned include White House Resort, Ruby House Restaurant and Red Garter Saloon.

Highway 16A to Keystone was closed for a short time, but is now open.

Not only was much of downtown Keystone destroyed from the fire, but dozens of people were evacuated in the middle of the night. Most of them leaving with nothing but the clothes on their backs. So, in come the Black Hills Chapter of the American Red Cross to help evacuees. The Red Cross showed up in Keystone around 3:30 Wednesday morning. They assisted 55 people who were left with no place to stay and little or none of their belongings. Andy Shattuck, of the Red Cross said, "A majority of these people that were in the motel had lost everything. When they got to the community center, they basically had the clothes that were on their back. They had lost their wallets, their money, credit cards and even in some cases they lost their prescription medications." The Red Cross set up evacuees with pharmacy's in the area, clothes and even found hotels for them to stay in the rest of the night. Shattuck says most of the people helped by the Red Cross were tourists, and are now on their way home.

Well, the way I heard it was some drunk from Oklahoma had been sighted throughout the Black Hills for the last couple of days. People said he had some of the nastiest gas they had ever smelled. Last anyone knew or saw of him, he had a lighter and was trying to light his farts..... /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

The Keystone fire could not have happened at a worst time, as the tourist season is just getting into high gear. Pennington County Emergency Management is stressing that one lane of Highway 16-a is now open and so is Keystone itself. Officials are worried about creating an even greater economic disaster. South Keystone was not damaged by the fire and businesses along main street that can have reopened. Some Pennington County Commissioners were there early Wednesday morning to survey the damage. Commissioner Lyle Hendrickson says, "That’s what we’re down here for, to get the feel of what’s going on and what can be done. We’re hoping that FEMA will come in and do something. We don’t know yet what federal and state is going to do." There’s no way right now to tell how many jobs were lost from the destroyed businesses, not to mention the dollar amount in damages.

Fire ravages city of Keystone, takes out nine businesses
The city of Keystone, SD is forever changed after a devastating fire wipes out one-third of downtown. An out-of-control fire took out at least nine businesses and left the tourist Mecca bruised right at the start of the summer season. Nearby Rockerville Fire Fighter Gordon Sable says, "There were 80-100 foot flame lengths. It was just going wild, going both directions." The call came in just after 1 a.m. Wednesday morning. When firefighters arrived, they found a restaurant at the corner of highways 16-a and 40 on fire. Keystone’s Fire Chief Wayne Kummer says, "At that point it was quite obvious we couldn’t do anything with the building, so we went into defense mode." Around 150-people responded to the blaze, and it took around 6-hours just to contain it. Even when it was contained, the fire burned into the afternoon. While fire fighters were battling the flames, Miner’s Café owner Paulette Schaefer was responded in her own way. She says, "I got a call from the fire department at about 2:11 a.m. saying they needed sandwiches and water, so I got up to (the café) and got the things ready for them." This is not the first time Schaefer has responded during a crisis in Keystone. She is just one example of how the community is coming together in this disaster. Schaefer says, "I’m really devastated about what’s happened to the people of Keystone. They are good people, good friends. We’ll all be there to help them." And the town will need their support. Buildings partially or completely destroyed include the White House Hotel, Rail-Head Restaurant and Donut Shop, a few t-shirt shops, the Red Garter Salon, Old Time Photo Shop, Rough Rider Leather, and the popular Ruby House Restaurant. Even across the street, intense heat melted a trash can. The front of the train deport is also melted, but still standing after crews sprayed it with fire retardant. Now investigators are looking for a cause. Sable says, "a lot of the buildings were old structures that had been built on, added onto for years, and they did not have some of the proper fire stops that we’d like to see." There is no word on injuries as of Wednesday night, but Pennington County Emergency Management says they have no reports of missing persons. Everyone from the White House Hotel reportedly got out ok.
