    NP 203 Guru\'s needed - Input Shaft

I am trying to setup my '78 T350/NP203 combo for my T400. I know I need the 32 spline input shaft ( I already have the marriage plate).
I have found a guy that has many chevy parts and we looked and found 3 - np203 T-cases, 1 happens to be the 32spline (out of vehicle in shed).
    Here's my delema:
When I turn the shaft clockwise and counter-clockwise the "play" I feel seems normal.. When I pull the shaft and push it back the travel is close to 1/4" /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif. The 27 spline np203 next to it only has less than an 1/8" easy.
Is this telling me the shaft is shot?
Or is it telling me that some thrust washer or bearing is shot?
I just want the shaft if it is good..! I don't feel like paying $150.00 from a shop.. When I can get this case for $50.
