    black is the correct color for anything on your rig that gets hot and when you want it cool. Black will radiate heat better, and help keep the operating temp of the case a little lower. The *only* advantage of red/orange etc that i have heard of is that you can see leaks more easily...personally I just crawl under there and look reeeeal close. No big deal.

    I painted my SM 465 and 205 "Machinery grey"...it does make chasing down leaks much easier than black or unpainted.

    To find the answer to your question ask yourself this;

    Is the rest of your rig stock as well???

    (customize everything)

    Most I have seen, seem to have been left bare cast, except for some "marker like" writings on them (mostly yellow or a light blue), which I assume was from the factory (similar to the markings on some frames. To restore them to like new status and keep them from rusting, many companies offer a "cast" color paint, made specifically for cast iron surfaces and restorations (even available as high temp).
    If you are just painting it to paint it, get the cheapest rattle can you can buy and go for it (the key is in the preperation) and it should last a long time.
