'71 NP205 with the front driveshaft off how much play should the splined shaft have in it, in and out, I can move mine about a 1/4" is this too much? Money is very tight right now should I mess with a rebuild kit on this?

    thanks

Are you referring to the front output shaft on the 205?

If you say you can move the yoke/shaft in and out on the t-case side a 1/4", that's too much. Something is not right. There should be hardly any movement in and out. [IMG]

I would tear it apart (start with front output shaft first to check for possibilities) and rebuild the thing.

Is that with the yolk on or off? If your yolk is removed, that much play is probably ok.

I am not sure how much end play there is supposed to be in that shaft, but a rebuild kit is not going to do anything to correct it if there is a problem. The problem would have to be with a gear or shaft. If the case runs and shifts good, and it doesn't leak too bad, I would leave it alone.
