np205tc gearoil or tranny fluid

    i just put a 205tc in my 84 k5 with a slip yoke. as i am changing out the fliud i noticed it was tranny fluid and i always thought that the 205 took gear oil is this true or did some take tranny fliud /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

    This has been discussed quite a bit. I run gear oil in mine but they say newer ones used ATF. Try doing a serch and you will probably come up with more info.

    80s they spec auto tranny fluid for increased mileage
    also extreme cold climates have a light oil spec

    208's run ATF. I thought all 205's run 80w90?

    Mine gets 80W90 gear oil, that's what the book I have for my '80 truck calls for.

    Well my books are old (76 FSM, 78 Clymers,& early 80s Haynes)so maybe there is some truth to the changing spec thing, but mine all call for gear oil.

    I use 80W-90 GL5 in my 205. As others have said, this is what the older manuals call for.

    I'm pretty sure my '88 crew cab had ATF in it when I bought it from the AFB. Ran ATF in it for some time until I installed Amsoil synthetic 80w-90, that's while I was pulling a 35' trailer. If the fluid is crappy looking run ATF in it for a few miles to flush it and then refill with your choice.
