To get it to bolt to a 465 you must have a 465 setup for the 208 and the 208 must be set for the 465. A 208 off a 700r4 will not work on a 465 unless you change the input shaft on the tcase.

I don't know about the th400 version 208's though. They might have a different input them the 465 or the 700.

The 208 is an aluminum chain driven case with 2.61 low range. It takes trans fluid for lube. It weighs about 90 pounds empty.

to activate 4x4 you pull straight back on the shifter for 4hi, move the shifter to the right in 4 hi and then down for neutral and then all the way to the rear most position for 4lo. You must shift in neutral to 4lo. 4hi can be shifted into at slow speeds while moving.

I think the 208 for a 700R4 is 27 spline input and I think the 465 input is 30 spline, but don't quote me on that I don't know for sure. I do know they are different though.

A 208 that mates up to a 465 is 32 spline as is the TH400 version but each have different adapters .HTH , Tom

what do you mean by saying different adapters since both sm465 and th400 bolts on the np208

The transmission to transfer case adapter is different. Probably in bolt pattern on the transmission or the length of the adapter itself.

Each transmission would be setup for the specific np208 input shaft and that specific adapter.

So you couldn't mix and match transfer cases, adapters, and transmissions. they all have to be for that specific tcase and trans.

Just as Hossbaby50 said - the cast iron adapters are different .
To the best of my knowledge a GM NP 208 came with atleast six different adapters
    1 ) TH350 to 208 std 4 bolt to round pattern long/deep crossmember
2 ) TH700R4 to 208 std 4 bolt to round pattern short adapter/ shallow crossmember
3 ) 465 TO 208 STD figure eight pattern to round pattern long/deep crossmember
4 ) 465 to 208 STD figure eight pattern to round pattern short adapter/shallow crossmember
5 ) TH400 to 208 STD 6 bolt pattern to round pattern long adapter/deep crossmember
6 ) TH400 to 208 STD 6 bolt pattern to round pattern short adapter/shallow crossmember

The TH350/700R4 208's have 27 spline inputs and the 465/TH400 share a 32 spline input . If a different spline is desired you can always change the input gear on the T/C and use the correct adapter .
There might be even more adapters than what I talked about but that is what I could think of off the top of my head .

Parttime only. And there is no kit for lower gears that I know of. It has the 2.61 low range so it is lower then most cases already. To identify you will probably have to count the number of splines on the input gear. There ID tag might be of help but I don't know.

If you are looking in a salvage yard for a 208, on the NP t-cases there's usally a round silver dollar sized ID tag on the rear of the case. You want a 208c. There will most likely be more "208f" cases out there that came from Fords which I'm not sure will adapt. Most of the 14 bolt rockheads on here like the 6 ton cast iron 205 case, but the 208 is a pretty good case as long as you don't get hung up on some rocks and damage the aluminum casing.
