Re: Official BB02 Picture Link Post (keep on top)

OK, since I was part of the Nor-Cal Big Dawgs caravan I guess I can chime in with some statistics of my own: /forums/images/icons/cool.gif

    Total miles driven was 2142
Total stops for gas was 25! (OUCH!) /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif
Total fuel required for trip was 331 gallons...(about $590)
Average Mileage on trip was 6.47 MPG

My best mileage was the first morning on the way to meet Frizzlefry (air was nice and cool, and no hills) where I got 7.715 MPG....the worst mileage was on the trails of Moab where I got between 3.4 and 3.6 MPG...!!!

Here are some things I've learned:

    - You should really have your tires balanced before logging over 2000 miles on the highway. The violent shaking of the steering wheel is funny for about 10 minutes, but is a LOT less funny by about the 40th hour of driving!

    - Sound deadening is a good thing to have also...I don't have any.

    - Protection from the sun is useful when travelling across the Mojave desert. I had a tarp on the way to Moab, but it was not useable for the trip home.

    - Wind noise is just as annoying as Swamper-Hum after 10 - 11 hours of straight driving each day.

    - 21 gallons of fuel is an idiotically small amount for a truck that only averages 7 MPG

    - 38.5" Swampers can make you look like a good wheeler. They fill in some pretty big holes and makes the remaining obstacle much simpler.

    - 38.5" Swampers are not magical, and cannot prevent the adrenaline rush of driving on an off-camber rock cliff...when the view is straight down! /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif

    - Along those same lines, I learned that it is possible to hold yourself in the seat using only the clenching power of your butt!!! When you are really scared, the seatbelt serves no useful purpose.

    - A front driveshaft with only 3" of slipjoint is NOT adequate when climbing steep stuff in Moab.

    - A simple rocker stud for a big block Chevy seems like a simple part to find, especially when you see a GM dealer, NAPA, Kragens, and numerous other auto shops on the same stretch of road..... but trust me, keep a couple extra in your toolbox!! Only the junkyard had one for us (and they were about the 6th place we went looking!)

    - Electrical Temperature gauges often lie.

    - Crossover steering is BETTER than sliced bread....both on the trail and on the highway. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

    - CB Radios are a necessity when travelling long distances, and they are awesome on the trail too.

    - Driving past memorials to people who have died on the trail that you are on (complete with wooden crosses, photos, and small broken truck parts) is EXTREMELY bad for your confidence on the trail.

    - The people you ride with will make all the difference to the type of experience you can have.

    - My Blazer is much more capable than I give it credit for.

I don't have any photos to post, but I did collect about 2.5 hours of video... I guess it's time to learn how to do video capture to my PC and get some editing software so I can compile what I've got into maybe 1 hour's worth of "good stuff"..??!!! /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

I will echo the sentiment of what others have already said, and will continue to say in the days to come. Moab is a phenomenal and beautiful place to wheel! It is impossible to convey the absolute majesty and vastness of the landscape in a photograph or video clip....it's one of those things you have to experience for yourself.

I met a lot of great folks too....as I would have expected, Steve Fox is a true gentleman and a great host, Steven Watson is as friendly and approachable as I had imagined. Matt from West Texas Offroad has a great relaxed manner, and loves to share what he knows with others. Marv Springer is a truly great guy, very friendly and I will never forget that he was the FIRST one underneath my truck to help me when I began a trailside repair. Thanks Marv! I met some of the other "1st Gen" guys, and finally got to put faces to all the names on this site.

A big, huge thanks goes out to my caravan....Tori, Louie, Frizz, and Burt. We had plenty of adventures, both on the road and on the trails...and I can't think of a better crew to experience all of that with! Extra special thanks go to Steve Burt for buying and cooking all that great food, and for being our trip "organizer".

I am still exhausted, but I feel great....it's good to be home. I can't wait to look at more pictures and watch my videos over, and over, and over.

    /forums/images/icons/cool.gif

....guess I'd better update my .sig one of these days too!! /forums/images/icons/cool.gif

Wow, how old is that pic? Three years ago there were a couple of crosses next to Lion's Back, with pictures of the 2 kids that died when a 4-Runner fell from the top in the middle of the night. But the truck wasn't there then. Is this the 2nd 4-Runner that's gone off the side? /forums/images/icons/frown.gif
