I mounted a antenna on my quater panel. Origionall I had a four foot FirestickII and It worked perfectly. Unfortunantly the wieght of the fiberglass antenna was to great and it caused to much flex on my quarter. I then purches a 5 foot regular antenna and hooked it up to a swr meter. After cutting about 6 inches off it the best reading I could get was 2.3:1 ratio. I now only transmit at 70% on channel 1 and full power only on chaneels 36,37,38,39,40? Why is this? Do I need to make it longer, shorter?

You might need a better ground. K40 and Firestik also make antennas that have adjustable tips, just turn them to adjust. I prefer K40 though. Never tried Wilson. I also have an 18' Shakespeare base station antenna and it rocks!

whats the lenght of your coax, 18 feet is the perfect length according to several cb shops I've visited, I've also always been told that if your swrs are too high that it will harm your radio and as you said rob power. Did shortening you antenna affect your swr reading? if so did it go up or down. you might be able to shorten a little more and get it in spec.

Why did you cut the end off? IS this an all metal ant? Check the ground and coax length.. If all is good, get a Wilson Fiberglass ant.. They have an adjustable tip oon the end to aid in adjusting the SWR.
