I hold it up and show my buddies,
Like we ain’t scared and our boots ain’t muddy, but no one laughs,
'Cause there ain’t nothing funny when a soldier cries.
An' I just wipe me eyes.
I fold it up an' put it in my shirt,
Pick up my gun an' get back to work.
An' it keeps me driving on,
    Waiting on letters from home.

It depends on which branches of the military really and what jobs they do. Like in infantry it is always a weapon. In a support unit it is usually called a rifle and if you like working with the planes and [darn] it is usually referred to as a gun. Just some info I have picked up over the years. Alot depends on which branch you were in as well.

I agree, weapon, rifle, '16, whatever you call it, gun is never used.

I didn't catch it, but I can still remember how much hell one could catch if a Marine Corps Drill Instructor head you say "gun". Come to think of it, pretty much anything a DI heard you say (right or wrong) was worth some sort of exercise.

You had to say something to get exercise? Hell we could have all been dead silent and still got to exercise. /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I caught that the other night. It's a rifle to me. The Gun is the M2 Browning .50 Cal machine gun. As for those drill instructors, I get to be one here shortly. I leave for school next week.

And speaking of leters from home, Mark Bibby, CPL US Army, died in Iraq last year. We were in the same Company on Johnston Island(chem weapons disposal facility) together. His last letter home was printed along with letters from other service members who died in Iraq in the Feb 2004 Esquire.
