i have a 69 chevelle SS with a 396 & M22 4speed. it has been rebuilt with a mild summit cam, a mallory HEI, and CR has been brought down to 9.5:1, everything else is stock. the car isnt run much but runs good until tonight(i pamper it).
i just now took it out for a drive, when in second gear at about 3500rpm it suddenly started making a popping sound. i have never heard a sound like this before. the best description is 'pop, pop, pop, pop...' but very rapid. it does this in first(3000rpm), second(35000rpm), third(3500rpm) but does NOT in fourth no matter what rpm i floor it at.
any help would be much appreciated.

Does it lose power at the same time? My wife used to have a Lumina that would do that. After a while I figured out that it only did this after I hosed the engine compartment down.
After a while it would dry up and quit doin it. So if you hosed yours down recently, that could have something to do with it.

Look at the carb. I assume you have a Holley which is notorious for blowing the power valve.

it has not been hosed down, the carb is a quadrajet-rebuilt and i am know doubting the quality of the rebuild, and the timing is adjusted.
i am pulling the plugs, i think it may be running lean.
but i just wanted to hear some opinions before getting in to it this weekend.

Sounds like it may be cross firing between two plug wires. What kind of dist. cap are you using? It is not one of the crossover style caps is it?
