A Gov Lock is a factory installed limited slip differential available from GM as an option. Mine hasn't worked in about 3 years. When I swap axles, it won't make the move.

A gov-lock is a GM factory LSD (limited slip differential) that was used mostly in corp. 10-bolts. It uses a series of plates much like clutch plates that is used to transfer some of the power to the other wheel that needs traction. Gov-locks are mostly considered weak and are a good canidate to replace with a stronger locker.

A differential in the part inside of the center of you axel housing ! The center housing is also called a pumkin. The differential is the center of haveing trackion or not having tracktion to both tires. LSD is a diff. that will preload both sides so when you step on the gas both tires will spin while still alowing them to spin at different speeds so when you turn a corner the inside tire won't churp, churp, churp.A locker will make both tires spin at the same speed all the time so now the inside tire on a turn will go churp churp churp.
This is the way I think about it so I hope it helps!
