    Subject: Engineering Problem

A piece of construction equipment weighing 8 tons is on top of a flatbed trailer and
heading east on Interstate 70 near Hays, Kansas.
The extended shovel arm is made of hardened refined steel and the
approaching overpass is made of commercial-grade concrete, reinforced with
1 1/2 inch steel rebar spaced at 6 inch intervals in a criss-cross pattern layered at 1 foot vertical spacing.

Solve: When the shovel arm hits the overpass, how fast do you
have to be going to slice the bridge in half?
(Assume no effect for headwind and no braking by the driver . .

What backhoe? I see an excavator, but I have never seen one with the dipper in a position like that.

Um no. Especially not one that would fold back far enough to crush the engine/hydraulic pump. I'm surprised the house gear didn't separate.

    Two comments....

I wanna see the damage to the tractor - 'cause you know that frame and fifth wheel hitch wrenched rearward.

I'm betting that driver is pretty messed up - going from 70mph to 0 mph in about 20 feet has GOT to hurt!

Very, very old news in my parts. Hays is only 70 miles west of me. I remember reading all about that in the newspapers and watching it on tv on the nightly news networks.
Geez, that happened quite a while ago, too.

mna, that is crazy stuff. I know construction machines are tough... but a modern overpass is pretty damn tough too. Guess we know which is tougher now! :thumb:
