I have a 70 with a open knuckle D44 with drum brakes. I don't know if it helps, but thats what is in mine and it is for sure stock.

  4. My 69 K20 has the closed knuckle Dana 44, heavy duty version. I'm pretty sure the change over came at the end of the 69 production year.

I think the '68s are closed, the '69s came with both & 70's should all be open.

    Never said I could spell!

  7. Randy, the HD front axle was different from the K5, K10 Dana 44 due to 86x u-joints and two-piece, six bolt drive hubs. The K5, K10 Dana 44 used 74x axle u-joints. Both axles were 1.31 diameter and 30 spline and both used the 8.50 in ring gear. The above info came from a great article in the March 2000 issue of 4x4 Power which is no longer in print. I've got it scanned if you want a copy. It is titled 4x4 Blueprinting "Classic 'Burbs and Blazers" and gives stats for the different engines, tranny's, transfer cases and axles for 67-91. The missed the ball on the transfer cases though cause they left out the Rockwell T-221 that is in many of the 67-69 Chevy and GMC's. Good to see you on this board.
