Does anyone know what makes quads like this illegal on US streets?

I have seen some tiny cars that aren't much bigger than this quad..

    Trike style motorcycles are legal..

If you wanted to try to make something like this street legal could you modify it to make it legal? And if so what would you theoretically have to do?

YEARS back, when ATC's were the **** and I used to read DirtWheels rag, there was a sidebar where a dude had made an ATC street legal, and there was a pic of him on the freeway in traffic. I think you have to incorporate a bunch of DOT requires crap, but I bet it's possible.

Its legal around here as long as you have your mirror, lights, tag, etc...just like a motorcycle...See guys all the time in the summer riding them on the street.

I would 'guess' that the same stuff as a Dual-sport motorcycle would apply.

    Basics like: Headlight/taillight,Blinkers(?), Tags/liscense plate,road tires.....

If you can make just about any dirtbike street-legal, I dont see why you couldent do the same with a Quad/Trike

I have seen a yamaha raptor street legal in an atv mag, three wheeled vehicles are legal with lights horn and plate, and dot tires.the owner of the raptor installed a sportbike rear swingarm to make it 3 wheeled.

That's cool... so it probably depends where you live.

I live in Southern California -- San Diego. I will have to check it out and see what they require here.

I know alot depends on the local laws (motorcycles, and such), but does anyone make DOT rated tires for quads?

I found some interesting stuff on it in a forum here..

    http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-187844.html

Apparently because it has four wheels it is held to car standards rather than motorcycle standards.. so it has to have a front winshield I think. DOT approved street tires.. a differential I believe.. I think emission stuff too

In PA it doesn't matter anymore, ATVs can't be driven on the street, you used to be able to put lights and mirros and such on thema nd do it. Thats what I've been told since I was little anyway. I'm guessing too many idiots doing stupid stuff.

I don't want to sound like Mel Gibson in CONSPIRACY THEORY or anything.. but I could see how the Auto industry would not want everyone driving ultra-cheap ATV quad style vehicles around.

It would reduce the cost of cars dramatically.. and I would think wouldn't be near as scary to people as motorcycles.

What I don't undertsand is that in the forum thread I linked to some people say that they saw some in Napa California.. then at this link for a conversion company it says it is illegal in California.. or is it illegal there without their conversion?

CA DMV says no way. http://www.dv.ca.gov/vr/ohvdualreg.htm

NOTE: ATV OHVs cannot be originally registered for on highway use or converted to on-highway registration, regardless of aftermarket conversion kits or added equipment.

That's what I thought.. but then there are people in that thread that say they saw some in Napa California.. maybe this was before they changed the law banning them.

So let's say you took car parts.. and built your own vehicle that was "quad-like" in size and how you sat on it and operated it? Would that be illegal too?

I got pulled over in Mass driving my quad down the street from one trail to another. The cop gave me a ticket for no seatbelt. Said if it has 4 wheels I need a seat belt. There was also the whole brake light turn signal thing. But got to love the seatbelt part

Wouldn't a seatbelt on a quad be more dangerous than not wearing one?

I think its stupid that they arent street legal...I drive our farms illegally one blacktop and gravel all the time, i feel a hell of a lot safer on that thing then i do a motorcycle. If I really wanted to I would find some SMALL radials, and get some wheels to accomodate them, but I have no problem running full speed on the bia offroad tires.

I bet it's kind of scary having a girlfriend who has a cop as her dad too.. he might end up framing you or something if she gets really pissed. haha
