You guys have fun wheelin. I'll be doing a clutch, hydraulics/ pilot bearing, input shaft, whatever- in the Cummins:( . Started f'n up in Moab, it's gettin worse. Driving it today absolutely sucked. I need to fix it now.

Should be back to towing duty within 3 weeks.

Found the real problem, 4500, Oh Crap- Input bearing or mainshaft endplay issue:doah: Thanks goes to Rene for the advice/ experience.

That sucks. Clutches are not cheap in these truck either to do them right unless your are SOOOOOOOOO MONEY. :D I am dreading that day in my truck cause doing it right means Southbend or similar. Could be worse though you could have the auto and be looking at $5000 to do it right instead of $1200-1800 to do it right.

Good thing you got 2 yellow Cheby's to fall back on for a DD.

Sounds like a good opportunity to put an aftermarket clutch in it and turn the power up... Too bad they cost so damn much.

It's bombed. Hence the short lived stock clutch.

Which clutch you going with Fred? Same setup as Rob? Someday in future I am sure I will be needing to do the same thing and step up in the clutch world. It all depends on how heavy this Smarty is and how soon I get some injectors & exhaust.:D

It was good talking to you Fred, I hope you get that thing back together real soon. At least you have that NV4500 book to help you out...

Personally I'd replace the input bearing and the little roller bearing that sits in the recess of the input and pilots the mainshaft...then see how the end play is. I suspect that should take care of the problem without getting too deep or spendy into things. The only sucky part would be if you ended up having more than the allowable endplay after swapping the new input bearing on and had to mess with the shim pack at the back end of the tranny. That mainshaft nut is a real bear to remove and re-torque. The only good from that would be getting a first hand look at the 5th gear, and whther or not there is any appreciable fretting on the mainshaft there (eminent signs of 5th gear failure)
