God am I pissed!! I don't have time or the tools here to do the work on my K-5 and just got a nice bill from the mechanic that I've used for the past 4 years. At first we were going to put in a used T-case cost of $350.00 for t-case and about $80.00 to put it in, told me it will take a few days. OK I said...... A week later I'm told it's done so I go down to get it and it has no rear wheel drive...Since my front drive shaft is at home it still can't move on it's own.... SO they tell me that they will send the t-case back and rebuild mine and it should cost the same as befor....Cool was my reply....1 1/2 weeks later I go to pick up my truck and was told that my trany is shot and need to be repaired also and that they would give me a price in a few hours.....Since I couldn't be reached they called my mom and told her that the trany rebuild is $900.00 and that the t-case was $779.00. I'm pissed off and can't wait to call him tomarrow.... I don't know whaat he thinks but I'm not F*CKIN* made of money.... I found a guy here that had a '96 700R4 and t-case that wanted $600.00 for the pair..... If anyone feels a rumble in southern Californa tomarrow it's not an earthquack it's just me screaming at my mechanic!!!!!

Don't feel bad, thats just Murphy's Law. I had a n.p. 203 that went bad and locked up , so I thrashed on the truck all day to put in a used one, only to find out that it wasted the trans. when it locked the case. Ended up driving a friend's Blazer that night instead of mine.

I had to replace both my tranny and tcase when I first bought my beast. Been happy ever since. Dont mean to make you feel bad but the tranny rebuild was $200 and the tcase was free from a bud who owed money to me. He owed me $170 so I got a NP205 for that price..... Slapped em both back in and not a single problem...

Right now i have a spare NP205 i picked up for a $150...tore it down and savin cash to put an auto input shaft in her ($150)..and a bearing an seal kit($138). Figure i'll make a nice profit off that one...since all 3 of our chevy 4x4's allready have NP205's...let me know when ya get back and you can tour my small but nice K5 garage...lol. Hope all works out for ya!!!

when i first bought my k5, 1 month after i had it and the first time 4 weelin my t-case went. I found out later that the guy that owned it previous for 6 years never once put it in 4wd. I tore the #@$^%^&%#$ out of it. That was $1700 w/ new u-joints, yoke and everything. A short time later I almost lost the front tire because some a-hole that did the front berings didn't do it right. It destroyed my front spindle and that was another $600. And then after everything was fixed I went 4wheelin again and ended up injesting alot of water into the diesel engine. Needless to say it's finally dead. Rebuilding with a 350 gas. Can everyone say "MONEY PIT"

    k5 broke but not dead

In the words of Cartman, kyle and rest off southpark;" THAT EXPERIENCE SURE DID SUCK"
I rebuilt my wifes litle 4 cylinder GM. Because it was using alot of oil. Took out the pistons. new rings and bearings everywhere.let a buddy of mine do the topp with the valves and the seals. I learned the secret, darkest black-magic mysteries of the mecanic. It's all so easy if you have the guts and the tools.(And the Haynes manual) I took the freshly rebuilt litle engine running just a litle ruff on idle, to the dealer for a carburator-tunup. I had after all saved big money doing the overhall myself right?.
They charged me for 1 houre and the car wouldent start the next morning. I treew it back to them after a few days checking that I had spark, engine timing-marks aligned, gas and air. The car would not start. The dealer then uses 4 houres checking the same thing!! They finally get it running using new spark-plugs. They readjust the carburator and now it runs the same as when I first got it out from the overhal.A litle ruff on idle?!!
Screw them, I had to pay for 1 more houre or they wouldn't let me leave but they admited to scratching the other 3!!?
I will now drive it for a while so the cyllinder hone- new rings get a chance to set. Then look to see if the haynes-book cant guide me trough a tune-up job.
I help all my friends if they have trouble I know how to fix. I'ts my way off getting back..

<font color=black>If you're not sure if its broke,<font color=red> try to fix it anyways!!

My rear end went out just after I bought it. Then the heater core. Not much for a heater core you say? Try $105 thru the dealer because every aftermarket rattled in the brackets.

    Re: New Mechanic

I would suggest a new mechanic, there is one in town where I live who operates like that, your bill is always higher due to your vehicle not his incompatance, He stuck my Minister before I knew the Minister was getting work done for around 3800 bucks for a orginal estimate of 1400 dollars, and yet people are always lined up for work, but very few repeat customers, HMMMMMMM wonder why! Its okay though because he'll always get his in the end...WK

...get everything in writing beforehand, insist on calls during the process, and get it all in writing afterwards...

I've been burned with paying a ton to keep vehicles going, but I've never, not once, paid more than an estimate. I'd have the thing towed somewhere else more trustworthy.

Hope the rumble wasn't to bad.... Ya it did come to $779.00 and he appolagized for not notifing me that it was going to be more, he replaced all the parts and rebuilt it to the point of the rest of the truck. He told me that he didn't want to half ass it, and that it waasn't what he wanted to do.... He told me that he would charge me the $450 and I could make payment on the rest..... The trany isn't that bad of a price thugh it includes all new parts(fly wheel, torc converter, exc.) and new case if needed. The mecanic is very good and fair.. One time I thought it was going to cost me $2500.00 for a new clutch in a Porsche and it wasn't that so it only costed $350.00.... Sorry for last nights post....I was just pissed and not happy to get the bill... I have to much invested in my baby to stop now... But it still hurts....No Winch for a while longer!

Was that winch or whench? I read the horror stories and cross my fingers...the ole girl has 118,000 and runs great....new heater core...new rotors(thanks for the help guys). The only surprise was making a run to Clevland @ New Years and getting a real close look at the rear driveshaft while running 65. Seems the new u-joint did not like the t-case and broke the yolk in the process. Threw the ole gal in front drive ...made it to the party. Figured I had 118,000 on the rear so I might have 100,000 left on the front. made it home nice and easy at 55 on the front drive. Got new spicer joints and a real meaty yoke and back on the trails again. Later brethern.... [IMG]
