Does anyone know the best way to get paint off of rocks? We are doing some graffiti clean up at a climbing spot here in NV. We have no running water up there but we do have a gen. I am thinking about a flapper disc on a grinder. We have tried goof off, paint thinner, laquer thinner , just about every chemical and we cant get it all off. Does any body have any suggestions before we turn to angle grinders and flappy discs.

I would think that sandblasting would be easiest and fastest.

I was thinkin wire brush and cordless drills. Maybe corded with those dc to ac things.

Yes I own two of them just can't remember what they're called.

    Transducers? Inducers? Converters?

Anyway, one of those and corded or cordless drill motors and wire brushes.

I would try a heat gun, they are killer for taking paint off everything else. Just hold it still till the paint bubbles, and then wipe it with a wire brush.

A friend of mine used to sell "graffiti remover" at his store. It comes in a spray can and he said it would take spray paint off just about any surface... rocks, signs, fence, etc.

I googled "graffiti remover" and there's a ton of products out there, but I can't remember the name of the particular brand that he used to use. Good luck :waytogo:

Goof off is the "Graffiti Remover" at least that is what it says on the can. You have to actually climb up a rock to get to this graffiti so a sand blaster wont help. It is about a 150 ft climb . The words are big hence the reason we are bothering with it. I guess we can try air plane stripper maybe it will work better than goof off and some more wire brushes.

The graffiti remove that I'm referring to isn't "goof off". It's commerical grade stuff that is used by the City and anti-gang task force to remove graffiti. He owned a traffic control and safety supply place. You couldn't purchase this stuff at Wally World or Target.

You cant purchase goof off at wally world either. THis is an industrial grade chemical that they sell at a local tractor supply store. It probably isnt the same but it does work pretty good. Yo can wipe paint off of anything but this rock isnt smooth so it doesnt work as well.

    good samaritan...

I applaud you for trying to right someone else's wrong--(the grafitti)...but whats to prevent the vandals from returning the day after your done cleaning the rock?....sounds like a thankless job to me..and one that will be in vain.. :doah:

I'd say sandblasting too,but you say its too far up..maybe a propane torch with a flame spreader would soften it enough to scrape it off..no matter what method, its going to be a balbusting job...any clue if its enamel or laquer??--even paint stripper will be hard to apply and remove under those conditions..I doubt mother nature will remove it quickly either..

In my hometown of Fitchburg MA,there are some cliffs visible from the town common (Rollstone Hill)...some high school pranksters climbed up there and painted "FHS" (Fitchburg High School)on the face of the cliffs--I havent driven by there lately in the daytime, but I bet its still visible after 30+ years..have to look next time I go by there!...they talked about catching the culprits and "sentencing" them to clean it all off,but they never could prove who did it....
