    Welp.

We inherited an African Grey Parrot about a year back. His name was Humphrey but I think we'll be changing it. Previos owner's kept him in a small cage for years, did not take very good care of him.

We got him a huge cage and let him run loose, he has a whole room to himself. One day we left a box on the floor and noticed he liked to hide in it, so we began leaving a box on the floor. Humphrey would get in and chew up the walls, looked like he was making a nest but since he's male we never gave it much thought.

Until tonight. He had been spending the last several days in the box, including nights. Gerri finally looked inside tonight and there is a big egg.

ADDY: This week: hail damages truck, thief breaks into our car, Parrot lays an egg. Wonder if these are signs of impending Doom.

Unless they had another parrot... I'll just tell you now that the egg is infertile... but if you think she may have had a chance to breed at some point, stick that egg in a 85 degree box for a few months (moist but not wet) and see what comes of it... if you aren't sure either way, you can candle the egg to see if there are red blood vessels in it... if you see red, the egg will hatch if incubated.

    Hmmmmm.......

Checked the net for more information.

They recommend just leaving the infertile egg alone and the bird will lose interest after a while. Then you remove it. Biggest thing is making sure they can replenish their calcium with a cuttlebone, hard boiled egg, or drumstick bone.

    What a week.

My grandmother had one that started laying eggs. not one, one at a time. About every week and a half, the bird would drop one. Finally quit after a while. They thought it was a male also.

Don't let it sit too long or it'll pop, I have a hen who is sitting on a clutch of eggs now and I just candled some and 3 them last night...
