Which trail is it? I'm just curious? There is one trail that I heard was closing here in the next few months. Something about they already petitioned to keep it opened but they got ruled against and so it is going to be gated......I guess they said the eco system is messed up from 4 wheelin' and they think this will help fix things.....

I don't know how it will fix it. They are paving the road in. I signed it, but last I heard the gates are already up. BTW, we need to put this stuff in the "land use" section. I understand why you put it here, most people don't look in there. Come on everyone the land is your's, if you don't defend it you WILL loose it. Than we can all drive rice cars. Am I hostile? YES! If you buy a 4x4, use it. If you don't act on what is going on, you won't be able to. Get involved, join a club, write a letter, make a call, do something. If you don't you can bet the GAGs will. Getting down from my soapbox...

Actually its not gated. There was a snow drift piled in front of the road. Placer county has since cut a hole in the drift large enough for vehicles to get through after there was some outcry from the 4 wheeling community. The water board who has placed the request for the gate has indicated they dont care if the solution is a gate or not, they just want to reduce siltation. This is the perfect opprotunity to stand up and make a change. The petition is great, but emailing or calling is better, being at the meeting on the 26th is even better still. If there is an interest I will provide contact info as I seem to have misplaced it currently.

That is good news. If a gate is not the objective, than their are ways to greatly reduce siltation in the water below without closing the trail. Post the contact info I'll write a letter. I think, or at least I hope, others will, too.

Here you go

The phone number for the Public Works is (530) 889-4000 (this may be just a main Placer County number though) and the email for Public Works is public_works@placer.ca.gov Tim Hackworth is the acting director

Here is some more info on this from another list:
Date: Fri, 23 Mar 2001 04:24:58 EST
From: YELLOWSUB1962@aol.com
Subject: Rubicon Gate
To: Offroad@offroadlist.com

The gate is being proposed from the Tahoe side...so yes your statement is
accurate. The runoff from McKinney creek runs into Miller Lake, then Lily
Lake, then into Tahoe. I don't know all the specifics of the runoff path
(though I'm learning quick), but the issue at hand is the McKinney Creek
crossing and the "siltation" its causing.

The problem is that the county wants to just up and close the road instead
of getting involved in fixing the problem. They have several million dollars
allotted to them for "maintenance of runoff" but would rather put up a gate.
We (the entire OHV community) are more than willing to help with the solution
to the "siltation issue", but will not be locked out of anymore of our land,
especially when the county and state have OUR tax dollars AND green sticker
dollars to address and correct the situation properly...

PSD

> My impression of the area, having gone over the Rubicon dozens of times, is
> that runoff from the majority of the Rubicon Road (we should start calling
> it a road, establishes permanence) *does not* flow into Lake Tahoe. It's
> not until you get over the top of Cadillac Hill that runoff would go east,
> and that's the last (and easiest) part. Am I missing something here?
>

Here is the letter I sent to Mr. Hackworth feel free to snip what you need if you write one.
Mr. Tim Hackworth,
I understand the Water Board has requested that a gate be placed at the Placer County entrance to the Rubicon Trial. If I am correct this is being done to reduce the siltation of Miller Lake, then Lily Lake, then into Tahoe. I am certainly in favor of protecting health of our country's water ways, especially one as pristine and famous as Lake Tahoe. However, there are ways to prevent siltation without blocking access to the legendary Rubicon Trail. I have worked with the regional authorities here in the Southeast, through my four-wheel-drive club, to protect both our waterways and the interests of the outdoor recreation community. If the information I have received on this issue is correct, then there is funding allotted to prevent the siltation problem. I urge you to look at other options instead of gating this access point.
I can understand that you may have apprehension in considering my views due to my Georgia address. Let me assure you that while I live in the Southeast I travel to California at least once every two years for either business or pleasure. While in California I have enjoyed many of your OHV areas and would love to visit the Rubicon Trail on one of my future trips. Thank you for your time and I hope you will consider my input in making your decision. Sincerely, James Martin.

Here is some addational info on the area. It sounds like if we are proactive we may be able to stop this one:
Actually, after further investigation, we have found that it's the Lahontan
Regional Water Works and Keep Tahoe Blue. The County does not want a Gate....

There is a Public meeting on the 26th (monday) in Auburn,Ca....We need
everyone to attend. We are extremely willing to work with the County/ Water
Works, whoever, to help implement other solutions. If siltation is really the
issue, there are many ways to fix it...A gate is not a feasable option...

More info on the meeting and the Petition go to:
