**UPDATE**1-TON FOUND* conversion has begun!!! woo-hoo!

This wasnt good, going home today on Hwy-18 here in Wa, a long deadly hill, i felt a minor vibe, not usual for my rig since they annoy me and so i cure them. I pull over and look, all seems well, figure i just lost a wheel weight.?
Then I go to leave the side of the road, and wont move... Hmmm? odd... tranny gone maybe? so i lock it in, and it moves. So I get to the next exit, and as im cornering i notice the L.R. axle seeming to be out maybe 2" farther than normal /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif . i pull over and it is barely on the drum /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif , no roll-bar /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif , 8 yr old playing co-pilot, and two toddlers in the back seat with the top off !!! /forums/images/icons/frown.gif

Thank god It didnt come out down hill on the freeway ! WHEEEWWW!!!I'll keep ya'll posted. Maybe good time to hang that 14FF underneath it /forums/images/icons/smirk.gif

Havent been wheelin in maybe a month, why would this break just going down the freeway? I have a Corp.. D44 with a Eaton H.D. posi.

Maybe the C-clip worked its self loose and fell out. Glad that everyone is ok though.

FULL-FLOATER AXLES ARE GOOD.......

Losing a wheel and axle on the trail is an inconvenience, losing one on the street is deadly! Glad it all worked out safely, and YES by all means get a 14BFF under that truck ASAP!!! /forums/images/icons/grin.gif

Whats a Corp d44? you mean a 12bolt? heh, as for the axle breaking, was it broke? or was the c clip missing and the splines are all still ok? kinda hard for the c clip to come out unless that center pin breaks isnt it?

It is a corperate 12 bolt. or d44, same i think..? /forums/images/icons/confused.gif
either way, it snapped, and we are lucky we got off the freeway b4 it came out completely! here is the carnage pic, i canr believe such a in-expensive part dosent have more protection from killing a entire family. /forums/images/icons/mad.gif

If you're going to keep running a "C-clip" axle get the kit that gets rid of the C-clips.

For a '77 Jimmy, that would be the corporate 12 bolt rear and the front would be the D44. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Good thing you pulled over to inspect the truck rather than trying to make it home. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

its gonna be a while(more like long while) before I am going to be able to upgrade to full float axles, what is this c clip kit and what does it do exactly...I've heard a little about it, but not much.

In order to bolt right in place of the 12 bolt, get any 14FF out of a 3/4 ton truck, either 2wd or 4wd will work fine. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Re: Ouch ! Broke rear axle going down freeway..4x4\'ers must have angels.

Not "c-clip kit", but the c-clips are what hold the rear axle shafts in to prevent them from sliding out, like what happened here.
C-clips are the weak link in any 10 and 12 bolt rear axle. They are ok for stock trucks with no lift and small tires, but once the opposite has been added to the truck, the stress is too great for the c-clips to handle. /forums/images/icons/frown.gif

There are aftermarket kits available called "c-clip eliminators", which simply put, you cut the ends off at the backing plate end and reweld the new ends that come in the kit. What the new ends do is hold the shafts in place via a pressed on seal/bearing assembly and also a flange which bolts to the new flange that was welded onto the cut off flange part of the housing.
These set ups are very much like the Ford 9" rears.

Re: Ouch ! Broke rear axle going down freeway..4x4\'ers must have angels.

The problem with c-clip eliminator kits is that they're generally intended for drag racing applications, they are not designed to take the side=loading present in offroading. You're more likely to break the eliminator loose than to break the c-clip.

As for the shaft breaking on the freeway, I've seen more broken semifloater shafts on the street than I have off road. It's one of those things, when they are finally fatigued enough to break, they just go when they go.

So, i found a 4:11 -14FF, and i just bought shaggy's 4:10 front set, are these 2 gears actually the same ratio? can i run them together? ( in mud, not street racing of course ) .. /forums/images/icons/grin.gif

Yes you can. Most front/rear ratio's from the factory differ by a little. Front ratio's are commonly 4.09:1, 4.10:1 and 4.11:1 and any of these can be run with a 4.10:1 rear. The ratio difference is less noticable than having slightly different air pressure front and rear.

I watched an axle come out of a Dodge one time up on I-680 in the Bay Area few years ago. Everyone was smart and slowed down and way behind the guy, and luckily when the axle finally came out at about 50 mph, the truck didn't roll and the tire with axle hit the center divide and stayed on our side.
