On the 350 2bbl that I might get, but haven't decided yet, it needs rings, and smokes a lot, from what I've heard. If I didn't mess with the rings on it, and just kept it full of oil, will it do any damage to the engine?

foul plugs, kill a lot of mosquitos!!!!
BUT!!! you have to be careful not to run it like that cause the compression of the motor leaks down past the rings and makes more pressure on the oil pan!!! if enough pressure can't get out you could do some real damage like send the pan into the crossmember!!!!! TRUST ME,, I'VE SEEN IT DONE.. made one hell of a mess....

You oil will loose its lubricating qualities alot quicker too. Usally it isnt worth it just to throw a set of rings into a block if you intend on keeping it or running it. I would save up for a new engine and run this one till it blows chunks, or tear this one down and go through it if you want to keep it.

Yeah I agree, its a bad idea to just change the rings. Oil will still leak past them in the grooves in the cylinder wall. It might run for a few hundred miles, but it needs to be bored and re-built. Try using synthetic oil, it wont foul the plugs as easily. When my old motor was dying, I used 3 quarts of synthetic so I can drive the truck until the new motor was built. I kept a close eye on oil pressure and level and I kept an extra quart with me at all times.

It sounds like this would be a bad motor to buy, even if it is for $100, what do you think?

For $100 dollars sounds like a great core charge trade in. I got charged $250 for a core the last engine I got.

If its a 4 BOLT MAIN motor and complete with everything including carb starter alt, manifolds and all the other bolt ons its not a bad deal. but get it rebuilt before you put it in your K5.
If its only a 2 bolt main forget it. It aint worth a fart in a fast wind.

if you do a half assed job getting the motor to run its going to run half assed. a complete rebuild kit is lees than 300 bucks and if you plan on keeping the thing for more than 10,000 miles i would spend the cash

This motor isn't going in my K5, its going in a beater that I'm getting for $200. All i plan to use it for is to haul lawn mowers about 40 miles a week and sell it in September or October. It already has a good TH350 and rearend, just a blown 327. I'm starting to think its not worth it, but need more opinions.

Why dont you just get a trailer for your K5 to haul the mowers and stuff? It most likely will be a lot cheaper in the long run. It would be 1 less thing to work on, put gas in and insure. Old beaters are sometines more trouble than they are worth. And if you decide to sell the trailer you will always be able to get your money out of it.

Thats what I've been thinking about after i found out what a POS the engine is, I think I"m going to do that, what about this-If i dropped the 350 in the GMC, and sold it, how much do you think i could get for it? If I pay 200 for the truck and 100 for the engine, I'm pretty sure I could make some money off of it, but how much? In that case, I wouldn't drive it at all, so no need for insurance, just an ad in the paper...

I've decided not to do this. The engine is a POS, and I don't have time to mess with all of this. If i ever find a good engine, that GMC i could ge tfor $200 isn't going anywhere, but I think I'll just get a trailer, and not worry about a beater.
