What is "religion"? And who decides what is acceptable and not?

Is it fine for muslims to "carry out religious beliefs"? Even though it involves murder?

If I start a new religion that says "I will kill anyone who does not believe in my religion", how long would I last?

If I claim that I will kill someone, I am thrown in jail. How can terrorists claim they will kill everyone who does not worship allah?

The terrorists are using "religion" as a trojan horse to invade us.
    When will we wake up?

Ahhhhhh, these religion posts always turn to crap quick :doah:

    Alright, here goes:

As human beings, we (that includes terrorists) have what is known as Agency (free will, whatever you want to call it). With that agency, we are able to do whatever the heck we are capable of doing. This includes hijacking airplanes and flying them into buildings in the name of God. Religious folks believe that people who do evil in the name of the Lord will be dealt with accordingly when judgement day comes around.

It's just as acceptable in the eyes of God for a Muslum to kill in his name as it is for, say, Catholics.

That said... You, my friend, are welcome to start any religion you darn well please. Check out the U.S. Constitution and tell anyone otherwise. However, keep in mind that the government will probably shut you down if you run around threatening to kill everyone :haha:

The key ingredients to religion are as follows:
    1. Belief in a higher being (God, Allah, Buddha, whatever) who is almighty and perfect.
    2. Some sort of scripture (The Holy Bible, Koran, The Book of Mormon, anything else) that is used as a guide for running your religion and gives PEACEFUL teachings of how to live.
    3. People willing to follow you and your belief.

Those are just my personal ideas on what makes a legitimate religion. Not necessarily true, but legitimate.

As is said so many times on this board, there are extremists from EVERY religion and sect. Just like some Muslums kill in the name of Allah, Catholics killed in the name of God, various other Christian sects have had people kill in the name of God, Jews crucified their Savior for freak's sake :doah:... Some people just get a few screws loose and somehow think that God, the most peaceful and loving being ever to exist wants to see his people kill each other

hehe... i know how people are with religion.. they get offended easier than political debates... lets just say, i tend to agree with your first line... the second, umm, we'll poke that one with the stick.. ;)

i do remember when i was young reading a list of a world poll of the 10 most important things to people and being utterly amazed that faith was #1. over family, love, etc... blew me away..

Anyone can start a new religion . You just need to be charismatic and convincing to your followers .

There are "BIG" religions that haven't been around long that took off .

Its just a matter of making people believe .

Religion is mans way of trying to reach God.

Gods way of reaching man was to give us Jesus Christ.

Jesus Christ, think of Him as a bridge God the Father gives you. You either cross on over, through believing his sacrifice on the cross washes your sins away, or do not take the bridge walk. It is all up to you.

As a devout sceptical agnostic, I liked the John Ashcroft statement (I think):

As a muslim you send your son out to die for God.

As a christian, God sent his son to die for you.

I find myself completely atheist except in a time of great need. When something goes wrong and I panic I look for something to believe in. A friend of mine recently threatened to commit suicide. She was four hours away and I prayed for the first time in 4+ years. Religion is what people make of it, wrong, right, sane, stupid, or otherwise. In any event, I'm sure this thread is going to get locked soon so I figured I'd put my $.02 in. I've been personally hurt by religion, but I know a lot of people that have been helped by it, to each his own.
