<font color=purple> I just went from happy to pissed in the same morning ! I got all the rust taken care of............. FOR FREE ! He didn't charge me a thing ! But that's where the happiness ends, As I drove along, It would barely keep running at slow speeds and it even died a few times although highway driving was just fine. Anyway, on the way home I looked at my temp gauge and it was starting to rise ........... It was running nice and cool earlier. I pulled over on the highway when it got too high ( only drove it for about 1/2 mile until I could get off the ramp. It was overheating due to my alternator belt being busted ( It was brand new ) ........ now the scary part ..... remember I have a new engine that doesn't have too many miles on it yet. Do you think I hurt anything ? I got to a parts store and replaced the belt and filled up the antifreeze, it ran real well right after that. I drove home and as I drove, it started to run rough again and by the time I got home it would barely idle. I popped the hood and now I have a pinhole in one of my hoses I have to replace. What do you guys think ? Please respond to this post. If I ever needed you guys ,It's right now !

Good luck guys. Have fun! Wish I could say the same. My budget was blown away (thanks Uncle Sam) and I'll be spending my week end redoing the watering system in my back yard before all my wife's plants die. [IMG]

Re: I won\'t be able to sleep tonight !

Do you have headers? Are they still sealed well? If they are warped or worse that can be an indication of extreme overheating. Check the oil for water (blown head gasket).
The idle thing - don't know if that is coincidental to the overheating. Fix the cooling system then troubleshoot both problems as unique situations and watch for other signs.
If it had died due to overheating I think you would have not been able to restart or maybe you would have seen smoke...?

Start with the easy part, this happened to me once, a lot of times after a fan belt snaps it will whip up and slice a hose with it so replace the hoses next and see if that cures it.

Re: I won\'t be able to sleep tonight !

    I hope everything is allright.

The pin hole leak could have been caused by the belt flying off and hitting the rad. hose. The poor idle and running rough could have been caused by the fuel in the carb boiling or a vapor lock problem.

About how hot did it get? How long was it run hot? How does the engine oil look? (burnt? coolant in it?) What kind of oil pressure do you have now? What kind of oil pressure did it have before? A small block chev can put up with running a little hot for a little while, but there is a limit. It could have spun a bearing or blown a head gasket or sucked a exhaust valve or be just fine.

If it were me I'd check the oil pressure 1st. Then drain the engine oil and check for coolant or metal (if it is a new engine it might have some metal in it anyway!!!) Take the oil filter apart and see whats in it. Check compression on the all cyl. but pay attation to the rear cyls., they are usualy the hottest and will suffer the damage first.

I hope it turns out to be o.k. RIZ

Re: Please read ! ......... please help ! ... I need you guys bad !!!!

<font color=purple> I didn't even look at it when I got home, I just pulled it in the garage and noticed the leaking antifreeze from the hose.

The oil pressure was running perfect before and after the over heating problem.

I'm going to change the oil in it tomorrow and check it out as well as replace the hose.

Why would it run great immediately after I filled the antifreeze and then barely idle only 15 mins later ? Is it something to do with the antifreeze leak ???? I'm so worried about it that I can't even think straight to figure it out.

I appreciate the help so far and any other info/advise would be great !

I don't think you hurt anything other than the radiator hose and the belt you lost. The running rough when it gets hot could be because you don't quite have your mixture, timing, etc. dialed in perfect. It could be off enough it does good when at normal temps, but when hot it's just too out of whack. My K5 looses alot of power on really hot days. I know I don't have mine dialed in as good as it should be. I would change the oil like you're planning and see how she does.

riz what year is your blazer?if its computer controlled i hope you disconnected the battery before welding on it.ive only seen it happen 1 time, but the computer can get fried.dont panic yet tho.work out your other problems 1st then see whats goin on.its just a good rule of thumb to always disconnect the bat. when welding on a vehicle

Hay RIZ, fill out your bio so we know what year your blazer is.[IMG] Need to know carb or F.I. and year.

You could have cooked a plugwire, and it might ground out after driveing alittle ways- kinda reaching deep for that one tho.

Do you think its fuel related or spark?

    Keep us posted.

Take it slow and easy, don't get yourself all worked up, and clutter up mind with "what ifs"- thats our job-

Hey Riz man... as I said in chat give me a shout if you need anything... you ain't that far away. Tools help...whatever. I'd change the oli and see if it looks soupy at all... then pull the radiator cap and let it warm up... watch for air bubbles coming up. Oh yeah does that baby have alum. heads?

Guys I believe Riz's truck is a 82 or 83... carb w/ a Beck 400 in it (or something in that ballpark). He had a run/idle problem before the over heat so it is unrelated.

<font color=purple> It's an 82 with a Beck 350 engine and an Edelbrock carb. I'm pretty sure it could use some tweaking. It was my first engine swap and the fine tuning isn't my thing. I'll keep you all posted. Thanks for the help and keep the ideas coming.
I'll check my profile and update it right now.
