I've previously installed the ORD bolt on brace and the steering was way better but after about a month I'm getting popping when I turn my steering wheel. I'm also getting popping sometimes when going straight, like from a stop or on a dip. I can't see any frame cracks yet but something is popping loudly.

Before I go buy the weld on brace, could it be anything else? Steering box, etc...

Check your frame for cracks again. Sometimes you have to do this to the point of taking the steering box off and REALLY looking...

Do what I call "homeboy magnafluxing" - scrape a razor blade across the frame at a 90 degree angle - it will snag on any cracks and/or make a popping sound when it hits them. Just don't shave with it after doing this test[IMG]

Hey TOAD!! Same boat here, well sorta.
My rig started the popping noise, so I checked and low and behold I had a crack. Get your other half to set in the truck and turn the wheel back and forth and you look at the rear lower steering bolt location. The crack on mine runs from hole, down diagonally toward the front then it wraps around/under the bend of the frame and then in towards the center of the truck.
I went ahead and installed the steering brace to hold me over till I get someone to weld in my weld on brace. I was hoping that this would reduce the popping noise, WRONG!! Its still there.
So now I have to sit there and stare at my weld on brace till I get someone to weld it on, or until I learn myself to weld. LOL!! I have a welder I get to stare at too. How ironic. [IMG]

Check for the obvious if you don't find a problem at the box. Bad bushings in the sway, springs, loose U bolts, fanned out leafs, broken motor mounts, missing rivits in the front 2 crossmembers... Motor Mounts busted, Rivits from motor mount busted. Lots of stuff that can cause it.
My wifes 79 has a spring that pops, It comes and goes.

It's not my damn planet monkey boy!

That's what mine did when I had the cracks. I couldn't really see the cracks til I took the box off, and then, there they were big as day! Also, check your box to make sure it is tight, as when mine cracked, the bolts came loose and started backing out. Just like someone said above, have someone in the truck sawing the wheel back and forth while you watch the box...if it is cracked or loose, you WILL see it moving, and then you will hear the "pop" noise.

Also, don't rely on the steering brace to hold it for a while, I had the brace on before it cracked and it didin't help any once the frame was cracked. You just need to bite the bullet and get it repaired.

Thanks for the responses. I think I'll get the weld on brace regardless of it being cracked or not. I saw about 4 other posts today about the frame being cracked so it looks like it is just a matter of time before it will crack anyway.

The wife is out of town for the week so I'll have to have my brother come help and then get my neighbor to weld it on.

I'll also check to see if anything else is loose or worn.

    Thanks guys.
