Interesting. I don't know that I'm willing to buy the whole thing, but at the same time I abhor censorship of anything.
Now, that being said, parents do need effective tools to regulate what their kids see. I may not agree with how some people raise their kids, but short of them creating menace's to society it is their decision.

I thought that it was an interesting point of view. I really don't see what it has to do with kids or parenting so much as someone aruging that porn reduces violent crime. I don't necessarily buy into the point, but I found it an interesting...

Well, I was thinking about Mach 4 at the time...

What I mean is, everydeviant social behavior can be alleviated or eliminated by proper parenting, or lacking that proper influence. I'm not waving the right wing moral flag here either, I think eveything in and of itself can do good, or at least be innocuous.

I doubt pornography has led to a decrease in rape in a major way. The reason we have more porn now is most likely because of or moral liberation if you will. There's a lot more allowed now then there was then. Coinciding with that, sex isn't a taboo subject such as it was, and women and men are better educated about the dangers of certain things and even that rape happened. Maybe it's a lot more likely to get reported these days.

    Porn is..... I dunno.... there's a spectrum

I think the writer had an agenda and then tried to justify it. I don't buy the argument. I think there are many other reasons why rape can go down, and the availability of porn isn't one of them. Most experts in the field will tell you that rape isn't about sexual satisfaction, it is about power, control, and payback. Porn is all about sexual enjoyment and I see nothing wrong with an adult having access to it. There are few documented cases of people viewing porn excessively and then running out and raping someone. In fact, the majority of rapes are perpetrated by men on a known female. "Date rape" is one of the common forms of rape, as are violent stranger rapes done by persons with mental issues unrelated to anything sexual.

Which came first, the chicken or the egg?
I think the increasing availability of porn and increasing visibility of sexuality has lead to the "Moral Liberation", rather then the reverse. Worldwide communication has expanded exponentially in the last 40 years. Before images could be sent electronically (via TV, internet, etc), the Moral Liberation was fairly un-liberated and had been for a very long time...
A lot more being "allowed" now is probably the result of desensitization, from the availability of more and more porn or just everyday sexual imagery available in society. I don't have any data on hand to back this up, but it has been a studied fact that constant exposure to pornography created boredom with sex in test subjects. Varying the kinkiness of the porn once again stimulated the subjects, but the effect turned to boredom after continual exposure. The point is, 20 years ago, it was a nice perk for a guy to walk past a billboard with a girl in a bikini. Now, you can walk past 20 billboards with women in lingerie or enticing imagery and it's commonplace, there were times I didn't even notice them.

Parenting is a large requirement and desparately needed more in the modern world, but it's not as simple as you make it sound. When your kid goes to third grade school and has a friend who talks about how they saw "Scary Movie 4", which you consider inappropriate for a kid that age, how does your kid not feel like a dipstick in front of his friend since he's not allowed to watch it, much less had any idea what it even was?
It's a decreasing scale. That kids parents didn't fell like it was inappropriate, or let him sit up while they watched it, and now he'll develope the same moral liberation with his kids, who will make my grandkids feel like prudes...

On the article, I agree with DR on the writer having an agenda. I'd wonder if he could discover a link between a decrease in skin cancer as a result of smoking...

Oh, I wholeheartedly agree that sexuality has turned from refreshingly untaboo to oversaturated.

I don't know about boredom and pornography as it relates to regular sexing of the human, but I know some people really get hooked on really lowbrow erotica and are pretty pathetic about it, but that can go for anything, television, movies, etc.

I know I'm not a parent, but I can see a few options I think would work that some people just don't think of. Of course, they may be idiotic in actual practice, but oh well.

I mean, I think, depending on how old and adept a kid is, they can handle a pretty balanced evalutaion of bad movies like mentioned, cheap laughs and such, be the end lesson to dissaude them from watching it, or to just to buffer the impact it has on real world perceptions.

In addition, I think if you can give a kid enough to be proud of, real honest pride in work, a hobby, a craft, an art, that mild idiodicies like not keeping up with the latest trends can be eliminated or at least kept to a sane level.

I don't know if you've noticed it, but in my generation and up to five years back, I have personally seen a LOT of old world morality when my younger friends want advice or express opinion. I see trends of victorian romance, temperance, and balanced throughout. Of course I hang out with the punks , loners, and counter culture kids, so maybe that says something about mainstream society as a whole.

I don't know, I think we just need more coherent thought and mediation. Between the strict authoritarianism with may result in rebelling, and the do as you will attitude which may result in a total ****up, there may be a balanced, protective, and informative area where parents and authority figures can give advice, and have it respected because they are respected, and thier charges are free to explore, but protected or educated about the vile, the wicked, the lowbrow, the exessive, and the puerile.

    Weeeeeeeeeeeeee

Bette Davis was beautiful, Bettie Page was sexy, Gauge was just a stinking unapealing slut.

Gauge was a porn star, BTW

I agree. My kids are prudes now (the oldest is 6) in some ways, but that's just to bad. The writer definately had an agenda, like I said I don't necessarily agree with him. I do agree with RJ - good to have you back.
