Possible bad ignition- got juice to starter with key off*FIXED-I\'M AN IDIOT

the starter wants to run all the time so i figured the selinoid was shot. braught home a new starter and the same thing- as soon as i hook up the battery the starter ingages and startes spinnin. soooo, i disconnected the ignition lead from the starter, reconnected the batterie and i have juice at the ignition wire with the key off. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif so i'm guessing my ignition up in the column is shot???

this started off intermitent yesterday, out of the blue driving down the road, the starter was trying to ingage. made a hell of a raquet. so now i feel i've ruled out the starter and it looks like ingnition switch unless i'm missing something. anyone???

this happened to one of our fords at work, you'd walk by it in the yard and all of a sudden the lights would go on or it would start up out of nowhere.
We took it to the dealership and turns out one of the gromments in the firewall got loose and fell out so the fuse box was shorting itself out because apparently water got in there. It was freak weird.
    Something to think about

As far up as i can reach up the column, the purple wire is hot. it plugs into some deal up there and i'll have to tear the column down to get any farther. soooooooo........

is it normal for an ignition switch to just up a take a dump? i've never had one go out in all the other trucks i've had. i've had a few electrical gremlins with this rig though- 2 pickup coils in 6 months. so is something else possibly going on or do ignition switches go bad and i should just replace it and forget about it? thanks,

replace it and let it fly...electrical parts do go bad for no apparent reason sometimes...

Switches represent a mechanical link into the electrical system. As we all know, mechanics wear over time.
I have had ignitions switches go out before. They can just wear and break.

    ready for the reason?

the ignition switch failed due to an intermittent short in the rahntsen circuit switch, a ground side switch that controls the kahnuter valve in the doohickeous rotational connecting slider for the ignition turnlock radial tab..

    hows that?

Don't forget, sometimes the whatsit slips out of the dooflatuos, neccesitating some fanniggleing on the part of the operator /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Well, after a new starter, ignition switch, and being without my work rig for two days i found out that my problem was caused by some abandoned wires either touching each other or grounding out. Aaaaah, gotta love the feeling of buying new parts you didn't even need. now excuse me while i have a few more cold ones to numb that sting of stupidity.

    Good explanation.

I was going to guess it was that Nut behind the wheel.

Or that there was too much tension on the Pistion Return Springs.
