It is leaking all over the place so I was thinking on rebuilding it.
It has a little slop in the steering wheel, but not much. Would a
rebuild kit improve the tightness of the box, or is it just gaskets
and seals? How hard is this to do? And is there anything else
    I need to know?

You could rebuild it. You should take it apart to inspect the seal wearing surface on the shafts. Also check for excessive wear on the teeth. The ones on the output shaft are tapered to take up slop. If you have leaks and slop you might have bad bearings. Anyway, it it's trashed too much it might be easier to buy a remanufactured unit.
