Ok, I got a new pump and modified it like it shows on WTO's website. I am not running hydro assist yet but have a Powerlock in the front and talked to Matt at WTO about just modding the pump for now just to get through the UCP ride. Well I installed it and bled the snot out of it and we are worse off then when we started. I now don't have power steering even in 2wd without the hubs locked. Anybody have any ideas? I am planning to put the stock pump back on tomorrow and I'm thinking I actually got a bad pump. I only have 3 days to get it sorted out.

Does the WTO pump have different fittings???

I would double-check that with them.

    Otherwise... I don't know.

Any leaks on the steering box?

    Good luck.

Got the pump from Napa not WTO. No leaks in the system.

Dang, I don't know. My friend's '72 is having the same problem. He just replaced the pump too. All I can think is there is some EXTREME bind in the Ball-joints??? Or some other type of bind in the steering.

IIRC - there should be no more than 25 lb/ft of "pull" with the tires off the ground pulling on the tie-rod horizontal the the width of the truck.

I just can't see there being that much of a bind.

The only thing left, really, is the steering box. Unless there is blockage in the high or (more likely) low side of the pressure lines. Maybe a seal got swept up into the low side pressure line???

I really don't know. Did you "adjust" the nut on the steering box? IIRC - if you go too far one way, you bind it up, if you go to far the other way it binds it up...

    LMK what you find.

    Thanks and good luck.

I don't see it on the WTO site but I swear I read somewhere that Matt said if you go too far (remove too many shims or something like that) modifying the pump you'll lose the pressure. Maybe...? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

HERE IT IS! Look at this thread, Willyswanter (I was wrong, not Matt) stated that if you drilled the orifice too large you'd lose pressure. Maybe yours is a similar issue.

that is right, if you go too large you will actually start loosing power.
Wayne if you don't have hydro assist you shouldn't have drilled out the fitting at all just removed the shims.

Well thanks for the help. I think I found the problem and it was nothing to do with the mods. When I went to pull the pulley back off to take the pump back out the pulley seemed loose. Well I wound up with the pulley and the shaft in my hand. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif It is going back together now with the stock pump and the modded guts from the new one.
