I have replaced the pump and belt and am still having problems. It turns to the left with no problem, either stopped or driving. When turning right at slow speeds, such as parking lots or on trails there is major resistance. The gear box is leaking fluid but I alwasy keep the level up. Anyone else experience this? Could it be the box?

    Thanks for the help.

Is there a chance someone installed a shock instead of a steering stabilizer on your truck? That might be the cause of the one-way resistance.........

    Just a thought......

This has just developed since I bought it. When I test drove it there was no problems.

I just replaced my seals in my pump and it gets hard every now and then, like on a right hand turn when I least expect it! I think in my case its an internal leak. Maybe it's the same for you.

I agree with jimmyjack,I had an external leak and it would do the same thing you explain that yours is doing.

could also be some binding of the worm gear within the steering box.

Thanks for the input. From what everybody is saying it sound like my gear box has had it. Should I just have it rebuilt or install a new one?

mine used to do that when going through a good pit,
I could only turn one way afterwards.
I replaced the box so no help in diagnosing,
but I later hit a frozen solid snowbank with one tire and lost all steering.
the splines in the PUMP had torn off completely.
it all looked fine but would no longer pump fluid.
was tricky to diagnose as the pulley spins fine and looks good.
I am not sure if the origonal problem was the pump spinning a bit on the splines or heat related as chevs dont have a cooler.
just posting to chime in that I have seen that same problem

I've heard rebuilding a gear box is a real !@#!. I havent done it personally, but mine is leaking badly as well, and that 3 inches of steering play gets my heart pumping whenever Im driving....

I bought my gear for 150 at Autozone. Just thought I'd throw a bone out there. Lifetime too
