Whats up guys, I’m getting ready to say goodbye to the cold barren north I like to call Massachusetts and hello to sunny DaytonaBeach, FL. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif 1200 miles later of course, And their enlies the problem. We're packing the blazer as full as we can and hitting the road in mid january. Depending on what vehicle my friend uses i may or may not be towing a small trailer. My question for you is what can i do to make sure the k5 makes it there as smoothly as possible and in one piece. Here's the specs:
1990 K5 w/ 110,000 original miles, recent full tune-up, stock 700r4 with fresh fluid/filter, headers into H pipe straight into dual glasspacks, K&N offroad air cleaner. 4" lift w/ brand new 33's for the street, 35's for offroad, & recently aligned.
Also I was thinking of getting an aftermarket tranny cooler. Any tips or things to check/fix would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot.

    Let's see...

Check/top off diff fluids and t-case fluid.
Check heater hoses and radiator hoses. Replace 'em anyway if they're more than a few years old.
Check the belt(s). I like to put new belts on, then toss the old ones in the truck to use as spares. That way you KNOW that they fit. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

"Why not a whole set "

Well when you replace a set of wires and 4 of them are burned theres not much reason to save the 4 burned ones.

I do 1000 mile road trips in my 89 K5 all the time. Shoot 1000 miles is just pretty much just a trip to the mall for me.. All I usually carry is my tool box, jumper cables,Oil Trans fluid, water/coolant and a spare Dist module. These are always in my truck anyhow. Course I keep my truck in good shape and always ready to run.
Yes put a few extra lbs pressure in your tires it makes a difference in fuel MPG.
On the highway I run my 33"MTs around 30 psi or more depending on load /towing. Basicly what I do is load the truck then and inflate the tires to the point where the truck is squirlly and wants to wander then back off a few psi.
Get a good 18000 gvw or larger Tranny cooler in ASAP. Espically if you tow get the biggest one you can.

I would pack the following for a K5 road trip:
    *small basic tool set
*spare belt to turn the water pump
    *ignition module
    *full size spare tire
*2 qts ea of oil & ATF
    *fire extinguisher
    *2 gal drinkable water
    *blanket
    *one spare rear axle shaft
    *jumper cables
    *tow strap, chain, & clevis
    *Haynes manual

Definitely add the trans cooler. If you have time install a second batt tray and battery. You don't even need to hook it up. If you can swing it make the second batt a deep cycle. Check for loose nuts & bolts. Make sure all maint is current. Don't start w/ a known problem. There are pleny of parts stores along the way. Take the things that will stop you in you tracks.

    Check the lugnuts!

I made a trip from GA to TX and lost a rear wheel while towing another vehicle. Trust me it's pretty scary hitting the median at 75+mph with only 3 wheels. /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif

With all the suggestions, you're gonna need to tow a trailor just to carry the parts! I'd say just ship the blazer and take a train!

If you leave on a road trip w/o a jack you are not smart enough to change an axle shaft /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif I guess I needed to tell him to put gas in the tank, too.
If you don't pour your old gear oil on the ground, you can put it back in. Before you make your next smartass comment saying it can't be done, I've BTDT, it works just fine.

Missed the joke. That's the biggest problem something like this, its had to pick up the scarcasim of a typed word. Next time throw in a /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif or if we had it on this BBS :flipoff2: would have been perfect. Or don't, I never used to untill I realized they help in giving those typed words some inflection, like a spoken word. (I still think they are gay, though /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif)
