I'm getting pretty fed up with my puter lately. It's had a problem for a while and it's only getting worse. About a year ago it started to lock up every time I tried to run either Scan Disk or Defrag. I used to run both at least once every couple of weeks...and the computer ran pretty smoothly.

Now it runs so slow it's embarassing...I'd burn it and buy a new computer, but I'm hoping maybe somebody that knows more than I do might be able to help out before I chuck it through a window.

So...any advice? Suggestions? Anyone else have this happen before? Would a new hard drive solve this problem?

It's a NEC computer, 10 gig HD, AMD-K6II 450 Mhz processor etc etc

Ok, have to say you could just be swamped down with spyware. Get Adaware and Spybot Search & Destroy. Run them both, see what that does, if anything.... worth a shot. It's free....

Hit control-Alt-delete and cancel all programs exept explorer.. The run scandisk with the fix all.. That should make it run.. Then reboot the computer and run defrag...Assuming you are running windows 98..

rene go to start run and then type in msconfig. that will bring up a box. go to the start up tab there you can control what starts up with windows. if you take the wrong thing out and it wont let windows start then you can go into safe mode f8 when you reboot and put back in what you took out. if you don't know what it is then take them out one at a time so you know what to put back in if windows wont restart. also if it wont defrag hit ctrl alt delete and endtask on everything but explorer and system tray then run defrag.

Id say go into msconfig and uncheck the unnecessarythings. Id also run Adaware. If those two dont work you can just reformat the thing and start new again. Thats the best option anyways /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I've had AdAware for a while now...ran it last night and it found a whopping 3 items. Spyware isn't the problem.

As soon as I try scan disk it locks up...I'll try and shut everything but explorer down and see if it still does it.

The only thing I left running was explorer/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif but scan disk gives me a warning now. It says that windows keeps writing to the disk causing scan disk to have to re-start...then asks me if I want to continue or not.

Be sure to deactivate any firewall and antivirus you're running. If you're on a broadband connection, shut it down and physically disconnect it from the comp.
If you're in Win98, Explorer and Systray are the only tasks you want to see running after you Ctrl-Alt-Del. Also, the only thing you should see in the Startup tray (lower rt corner) is the volume control and the time. Anything else causes problems with Scandisk in Win98. I learned this the hard way, too...
