I pulled the cover and when getting the pin out of the carrier to remove the center pin noticed it won't come out past the ring gear (4.10's). So I guess I have to pull the carrier and take the ring gear off do I have to reset the gears or just put evreything back the way I found it.

Mark the gear and carrier so the gear goes back in the same position that it was on. You should be fine, I don't see any need to reset the gears if you get everything back how it was.

Sounds good, the housing is bare except for the carrier and gears I pulled the bearing caps and set them to position them right back where they were but the carrier won't pop out even with a pry bar. Glad I'm not in a hurry. Help!!!! Also do they sell a tool to get the threaded tapered piece for the upper balljoint out of the inner knuckle. Thanks for your help I went thru 10 search pages.

I think you need a case spreader to get the diff in and out.

They do sell a tool to do the ball joints but I could never find one. I ended up making one out of a impact socket using a cuttoff wheel on my die-grinder. Took less time to make then find one allready made.

Whoops, sorry I didn't see this sooner, I would have replied. A case spreader will make the job alot easier, I've always been able to get the carriers back in, it's just a matter of monkeying with it to get it started, once you get it started then it's just a matter of tapping it in with a soft faced hammer.

Just be happy it's not a corporate axle, those ones are a real pain since the shims on them are loose, they go between the carrier and the housing so it's real easy to destroy them when you reinstall the carrier.

You can get the balljoint socket at the NAPA on Santa Fe. Took 2-3 days. $20, I think. If they can't find it, you can borrow mine.

Strange that you can't get your carrier out with a pry bar...I blew up the spiders in my D44 awhile back, All I needed was about a 4' prybar and it popped right out. How big is your prybar? And like Shaggy said....Make sure ya use a dead blow or brass hammer to tap it back in.

I don't know anyone with a case spreader. I would think you could weld up one without to much trouble. It's just a flexible square with two pins and a bolt on one side. Check out this pic http://www.4x4wire.com/jeep/tech/axle/oxlocker02/dana44casespreader.jpg
You'll need a dial indicator to measure how far you sread it.

you can get a ball joint puller from national auto.you also need a ball joint pickle fork similar to the one that you use for the tie rod ends.its just about twice as thick.when you do it it is good to heat the joint up a little with a torch and have a BFH to hit the puller with to pop the ball joint.

Not the ball joint itself but there is a threaded piece in the knuckle most don't change that piece but it came with my ball joints so I'm gonna change it.

Haven't got to try it yet I'm building the axles in the garage. It was 241$ at 4wp 247$ shipped to my door it is very simple to install and should work great I hope.

Re: Putting a locker in a D44 ?\'s

I know it sounds simple, but make sure you slid the axles out far enough to clear not just the side gears, but the carrier too. Once you do that, take 2 prybars and put one on the top and one on the bottom of the carrier. Pry it out.

Thanks for all the replies, I finally got it out I put a piece of square tubing across the housing and pried from under the edge of the ring gear and it popped right out.

i see this is why you are taking the carrier out of the axle.i thought since you had it in your bio that it was already in.let us know how it works when you get it under your rig.
