Question about Engine RPM\'s for an 87 350EFI

I'm looking for tach's, factory or aftermarket. I'm wondering what the red line would be for a stock motor?
I remember in my Dodge I had a SunPro 8,000RPM tach and it moved VERY little. I'm looking at the 5000RPM tachs in the 2-3" range with at least 180-200Deg sweep.

    Something like this
    [IMG] AutoMeter 2967 2 1/16"

    [IMG] Or the 2891 2-5/8" 6000RPM tach

QUESTION IS, What is the RPM range for a STOCK TBI350 for an 87 or the like Blazer/Truck? Should I get a 5K or 6K RPM tach?

5K is plenty for a stock TBI motor. Redline on 'em from the factory is in the 4,500-4,750 range. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif The factory tach on our '94 Sub only goes to 5K.

I don't know what redline would be, but get that 2nd one.....it looks BITCHENER!??

The first one looks like a "Boost" gauge from some Fast & Furious car. And I don't think you want THAT, do you? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Not sure of true stock redline but my dad told me that the orig. motor in his 73 the valves would start floatin at about 5500 rpm so id say get the 6k one just so if you can take it past 5k you know ehere your at still. By the way when we rebuilt the motor we put some kinda special valve springs in there and i can take it to 6500 no prob.

Factory Redline on a 350 is 5500RPM. Most of them cough around 4800-5200 because of the mild cam. Its usually safe to go to 6000 and real redline is around 6500, but the stock valve springs, cam, manifold, exhaust wont let it get there.

Get at least a 6 grand tach. You never what the future holds for this project.

A 2" tach? What, are you gonna get out the magnifying glass to read it? The tachs mounted on the floor like some peeps do crack me up. That can't be helpful determining shift points. I suppose it does provide some entertainment while cruising along on that long trip however....

If I were driving your '87 350, I'd shift it at around 7800 RPMS, but not much higher than that.
