Went to get a couple quotes for some very basic lettering across my shoulders last weekend.

Does $450 sound unreasonable to you or am I just a moron. I was expecting $200-$300 at most.

Minneapolis. I expected it to be a little more expensive because I was in the cities but ****, I think they saw my mouth drop open a little.

How tall are the letters? With the message I recall you thinking about, that seems on the high-end.

With the length that it would need to be to fit probably 1"-1.5".

I just don't see how an artist's time is worth over $200 an hour.

eh many artist's time is worth that much. However, that seems rather steep to me. I garauntee at the shop I go to a piece like that would be at the most $250, if it were really detailed lettering.

cities are always more expensive. To have a shop means there is more overhead in the city. Everything is more expensive to them, so it is to you as well.

Check local shops, find out where friends got work done. I doubt even the more expensive shops locally to me would charge you that much.

Well, to be fair, I was close to the U of M campus, so I'm sure overhead is insane. I stopped by the local place that my friends have had work done at but it was a Saturday afternoon and it would have taken me an hour just to make an appointment. Guess I'll go back sometime next week.

450 is ridiculous for basic lettering. For that price his girlfriend should be blowin you while you get the work done. Id be insulted, he was tryin to rip you off.

Depends on the artist. If it's custom letter's free hand, yes it could even be more. You get what you pay for.
