I just recieved my ebay purchase today of a set of Dana 44 flat tops. I was looking at them and noticed what looks like one knuckle the tie rod loads on top and the other the tie rod loads on bottom. I think I have a problem? I have emailed the guy I bought them from and am waiting to see if he can correct this .....Guys give me some feedback....Jason

Here is what he emailed me back does it make sense to you guys....?
Jason,What has happened is I also had a set of Jeep knuckles for sale last

it sounds like you have a non flat top driverside, and a flat top passenger side.

No they are flat tops but one has the tie rod hole upside down from the other.

Re: Question on Dana 44 Flat tops

There are a couple things you can do.

go hysteer and not use the lower tierod mounts, make the dude send you a correct drivers knuckle, or have someone braze the drivers knuckle and then reem it for the upper TRE hole.

I didn't think about the high steer option that would work. Is there any other things that might be wrong with them that would keep me from using them....Jason

When you get a set of flat tops they are top loading. When you get a set of non flat tops they are bottom loading. Key word is "set". Problem comes in when you get a flat top drivers side that is newer with a flat top passenger that is older. They look the same except that the newer style loads from the bottom. Been going through this lately and this is what my investigation has turned up.

Re: Question on Dana 44 Flat tops

The answer is that all GM drivers side knuckles, whether they are from a 10 bolt or a 44 are flat top. It is just the passenger side that changed, since there was never a steering arm mounted on that side. Depending on year, some drivers side knuckles have the tie rod taper up, and some down.

Actually I have a few axles laying around here and so far all the flat tops I have seen are top loading but the newer non flat tops come in either top or bottom loading.
I guess the difference would be the years of manufacture but still no idea which years came what.

Re: Question on Dana 44 Flat tops

my understanding is that all flat top axles were top loaders, i think they were from 73-76, but not certain. all non flat top axles were bottom loaders. that is why i stated that you have a non flat top driver side (yes i know, it is flat and has studs, but not from a factory set of flat tops) and a flat top passenger side.

so my final answer is that you got an unmatched pair.

why cant you run a top loading tierod?

I will have to go hi steer because my springs will be in the way if I go toploading. I think. I am waiting to hear from my machine guy and see what he says....Jason

Re: Question on Dana 44 Flat tops

I had the same problem with my pass side flat top (I didn't buy a matched pair). I brazed the hole and reamed it out to load from the bottom.
