    It was a factory option.

Yes they are a factory option, my '87 has them. BTW if you want to add them to a non dual shock truck the GM part #'s (thanks 6.2L Jimmy!) are 14072699 and 14072700 (you will need both) and they are less than $30.

yeah, my 85 had 4 shocks up front from the factory... with shock technology where it is today, its really unecessary... I only run 2 up front now.

It really depends on how you use your rig....If you are like me and like to see how high your truck can jump before an axle snaps, dual shocks are a must....But like you say, for most anything else there is no need for dual shock and they will only make the ride rougher.

Could you unbolt 1set of front shocks for the street and just bolt the other shock on when you go wheelen or would this be to big of a pain?

Well I use RS9000's, so I can just adjust them to a softer setting on road. Any more work than turning the knob, and I would say that it is too much work. Even if you use a single RS9000 on the front and put it on the stiffest setting, it will feel like it has dual shocks and basically have the same effect at a lower cost.
