Re: R&P experts read my patterns [PLEASE]

Are you using anything to apply a slight load to the ring gear while you check the pattern? It makes the pattern much more noticable and it does look as if the pinion was a little shallow, although the driveside does still look as if the pinion is contacting a little to deep on the drive side of the second try.

pinion looks a little shallow it should be more towards the toe of the ring gear.

Are you putting any kind of drag on the carrier as you turn the pinion?

Your pinion is still too deep. add about .005 to .007 and repattern and then post again. you can send me pics direct if you want. I'll be online almost all night.

Welcome to the hell of doing R&P installs. they will read strange things and sometimes will even make you think that you need to go in the oposite direction unless you know what to look for. Also if they are a used gear they will be a bit starnge to set up also.
I try to take a pattern off of the gears before i pull them out so when i sell them i'll know where they were running in the old housing. I don't suppose you did that?

Re: R&P experts check here (UPDATE) NEW PATTERNS

IIRC, Randy's ring and Pinion states that most often, you will NEVER get a perfect pattern with a used set of gears, and that the coast side is less important especially with used gears. (hope I remembered that right)

    Have your experiences been different?

I know full well the dangers of not setting the gears up correctly, did it once by just swapping carriers in the axles, then had to go back in and set it up correctly to get rid of the unbearable noise.

My paperwork says coast side is MORE important than drive.

Re: R&P experts check here (UPDATE) NEW PATTERNS

I could have that backwards, it's been a few years. Just curious as to what was more important, because I remember that one side was specifically mentioned as more important in regards to used gears.

As to another question as to why your gear pattern seems different when you turn the ring/pinion to the "other side", is there any chance you had to much of the marking compound on the gears by that time, and it's just not a clear pattern?

I think I may have cleaned mine off every time I made an adjustment, "just in case" that was an issue.

Why would the coast side be more important then drive side?!?

Re: R&P experts check here (UPDATE) NEW PATTERNS

It's not but they don't want you to concetrate on the drive side on a used set because it will be worn more than the coast side. So if you concetrate on the coast side and get that pattern correct then the drive side will automaticly be in the correct possition even if it doesn't look correct due to the wear pattern that it may have developed over time.
