Forget the radar detcetor....get a CB...you should have one already since you own a K5....channel 19..truckers. They know where every bear is at. I got a radar dectecor....then I got a ticket...now I have a CB...no ticket. Plus you can use the CB to get help in case of emergency and you can talk to people. Now tell me a radar decteor can do all that!!!!

I agree with with sk15, I used to use detectors and I used to get tickets. Here's the deal: With instant-on by the time your detector picks up anything you are already nailed. This happens alot at night when there are not many cars on the road. 2nd, you become lazy when you use these, they give you a false sense of security. 3rd, If youre gonna speed (out west that means 80+) pay attention! Drive in the right lane Pass in the left, watch the cars ahead of you for break lights especially around curves. Watch for cops on on-ramps and bridges, when you see those white timing lines under bridges slow down if youre not sure. It takes alot of work. With the 75mph limit these days I just set the cruz at 79 and forget it all. See ya.

  6. If your going to buy a radar detector buy a escort passport!
I would'nt waste my time with that wal-mart $hit. Also buy a cb to go with it.The only way to realy use a good detector nowadays is find someone hauling a$$ and stay about a mile behind them this gives the radar a target and you a chance to slow down when the radar pegs them!LOL This is how I do it and its worked great for me,also if you use a cb always tell the others of blue lights in the area.If it is'nt a police car 95% of the time it wont set of my passport.Mine usally sets off a few cheep ones though!LOL Good Luck on your trip.

Coming from a "Bear", I haven't found one particular brand of radar detector that works better than staying close to the speed limit. Drive safe and watch out for the other guy.

Thanks everyone... we picked up a Cobra 9200, It has 360 degree detection, picks up all bands.. and it talks !!!
We have alot of miles to travel... first headed to Westchester Ohio for a day, then off to Rockaway New Jersey to visit my folks for Xmas.
    Then reverse trip back again.
Not taking the K5.. Don't think she'd make it.. we're taking her 97 Jimmy .. Looking forward to the road trip..

sometimes the speed limit just isnt fast enough. i agree some cars shouldnt be on the road let alone speed. and besides isnt the speed limit set low to accomodate the incompetent drivers.
they should test you, and the better you do on the test the faster you should be allowed to drive.

The only new detector that is worth anything is the Valentine 1. I have an older Cobra digital display detector, and wanted to replace it with a newer one. I bought the Cobra 9500, supposedly one of the best out there. I ran both at the same time for a while, and found the older detector picked up radar about half a mile before the new one did. Sometimes, I got barely 200 yards of warning from the new one, where the old one saw the cop at over half a mile. I don't know much about Bel, which is supposed to be the other good detector, but the rest are crap. tehy are so small now, and have so many features crammed into the case, that there is almost no room for the radar antenna. Like it was stated before, get a CB and listen. If ya can find one, the small Bearcat BCT10 and BCT12 windowmount scanners are nice too. They will run ya about 120 bucks, but they pick up all the police freqs, state and local for all 50 states and the canadian provinces. That includes the repeaters the officer uses to talk to his car radio when he is out running a speed trap. Saved my but at least twice on a long trip. If ya buy around now, you can usually get the scanner on sale at any big truckstop. I got mine for 50 bucks, down from 120.

Buy a Valentine 1 like Blazer Guy said. I have one and hey work Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are little more expensive than normal one but they are well worth the extra cash! They tell you what type of radar it is detecting, how many it is detecting, what strength it is detecting and Where it is detecting it from. The last feature is great and you never have to start looking all over when it starts going off because it tells you where ot look!!!!

I have been using mine for about 4 years now and (knock on wood) I haven't recieved one ticket!
I have had other brands of radar detectors and nothing picks up things like the Valentine. Hell sometimes it even detects them around corners and over hills!!
When you talk to bigbad82K5, ask him about mine. He didn't really get to see it work but he was asking me about it when I was down his way!

Hey rocko, what are you worried about? If you see blue lights coming up behind you, just slam on th egas and gt outta thare!!! lol .......j/k here [IMG]

I agree with the CB thing though. I drove here twice from RI. I had a CB and a radar detector on both trips. Here is what happens: you hear a trucker telling of a cop setting up radar just over the hill your about to crest. You slow down, come over the hill and the officer hits that "Instant On" on his gun. This is when your detector goes off ... a little late by now. But since you were warned by the friendly trucker on the CB, the you get clocked at the speed limit [IMG] and cruise right on past.

    Just my 2 cents .......

Have a great trip and be safe. I wish I could afford a trip back home for Christmas ...... you guys will have a great time, I just know it! [IMG]
