hi i have a 1987 k5 blazer with a tired 350 with 146,000 miles, i plan to buy a crate motor for the truck and i was thinking about the zz4 and putting the edelbrock multi-point fuel injection system on it and a friend of mine reccomended going with the ram jet 350 cause it will be a lot easier because my truck is fuel injected already, any ideas or comments would be appreciated, thanks.

I dont believe the edelbrock system is set up for the vortec intake pattern. The Ram Jet is overpriced IMO all you are getting is a 330HP with a very expensive, harder to get parts for, EFI unit that looks really cool. The ZZ4 is a great motor, I have driven quite a few. Keep in mind though that you are only getting 20HP for an extra $1000 (ZZ4 vs 350HO) IMHO Go with a 350HO w/ a TBI intake, and spend the other $1000 on upgrading your current EFI

The ZZ4 might be a great motor, but I wouldn't want it in my truck. It's got a 10:1 compression ratio and doesn't run on regular gas.

The 350 HOs have Vortec heads on them already anyway. You'll need the Edelbrock Vortec TBI intake, or, you can swap it to the port injection setup if they make it for Vortec heads, which use a different intake pattern than standard SBCs.

Crate motors have good warrenties and are easy to drop in and go, but if it was up to be, I'd build my own.

The reason that the zz4 has 10:1 compression is because it has aluminum heads with 58cc chambers. It puts out 355hp and 405ft/lbs. The Ram jet has cast iron vortec heads with 64cc chambers. it puts out 350hp and 400ft/lbs But it is about $1000 more. i could justify the ram jet for my truck if i had the money cuz i dont have fuel injection.

    84....
The ZZ4, Ramjet, and 350HO all are recommended 92 octane use engines. I have personally run the ZZ4 on 89 with no detonation problems and the 350HO on 87.

84 K-10, When you say it wont run on regular gas, I suppose you mean 87 octane. True if correct. But the extra 4 bucks a fill-up for 92 octane is worth it IMHO. I still get 14mpg. The ZZ4 is a great motor. You get everything new and the timing set at the factory. Never had a problem with mine. The aluminum heads cool so much easier also. It is a very complete package for an all new parts engine with a 12 month 12,000 mile warranty... That said,

The Ram-Jet is a great motor esp if you want Fuel injection. It only needs 12 Volts and Ground to hook up. Then supply fuel to it. It comes complete and will out power most TBI's out there. I did say most.. For ease of installation for the fuel injection it's a great buy without extra parts chasing.
